One Piece is my 4th favorite manga of all time, (#1 is Dragonball, #2 is Black Cat, and #3 is Death Note) and my second favorite "super series". I think that the reason I like One Piece so much is mostly because of the plot. I love a good story. To be honest, I think that's why I read manga, for the stories. (That's why I mostly like shonen and seinen. ) One Piece is just a great story, with a wonderful plot. The characters are very good too, and even though I'm more of a plot person, I can appreciate how well the story flows thanks to the characterization. And the world. A good story is always better when it's in a fantastic world you can explore (which is why my favorite volume of One Piece is volume 26, when they first get to Skypieia, because I liked how they spent that volume exploring Skypieia). And what world could be more fantastic and fun to explore then the Grand Line, where anything can happen, and dreams come true. That's why I love One Piece.
First things first. One Piece is my all-time favorite manga. People may say that the plot is simple, but wow, look at how it's delivered! The characters aren't as simple as they seem. They're humans, they live, they breathe, they think, and they feel. They have unique personalities that develop as the manga progresses. It's like inputting light shoujo character development into shounen action. Yeah, people may say that shoujo can be sappy, but they're mostly focused on the character development that it may seem unreal.
Here in One Piece, the plot and the char dev are mixed so good that you may have already been part of the story. You have goals that you would want to achieve no matter what. You live life to the fullest and be yourself. You are who you are in this world and there's nothing anyone can do about it.
This is One Piece.
At the start of the manga, the plot was already introduced so you won't have to get stuck in understanding the characters--you get to live with them. They're simple, yet so complex with strong beliefs that it makes you stick with them and be in awe.
Don't mind the art--it's simple and it's satisfying, and it makes you focus more on the story itself and not just on how good it feels to ogle at the characters.
Lately, the plot has progressed, so it was a big plus for OP. Things may not be as simple as they seem. Also, imo, it might be better to read the latest chapters by bulk. (I started to find OP better by 2-3 chaps than as singles.)
It's been several years since I start reading One Piece and what I found the best is the way it makes me moved. ^^
Sometimes I feel like being dragged into the flow of the story. I won't say too much coz lots of people here already points out the good points of this manga. What I can say is Just Read IT. Try out the Anime too. ^^
i definitely find one piece interesting and fun!!! the funny moments can make you laugh until ur stomach hurts, while the sad moments make u cry. both anime and manga is great. the anime doesn't sidetrack much, actually it doesn't, does it?
anyway, it's cool to see them fight for their friends, beliefs and aim for the sky!! haha!!
anyway, does anyone feel that in the anime, the characters all got sharper chins somewhere in water 7?? don't mind this sentence if u do not think so.
The fact that it IS the no. 1 shonen manga (if not manga in general) in Japan says it all, ne? 😀
Having the funniest main character I ever seen, teaching the values of true friendship, One Piece is probably one of the best manga.
Indeed every good manga tends to be overrated on their ratings. Because the rating is the overall view on the title. One piece have far many good, funny and addictive story pieces than boring generic shouen genre.
What is a cool SJ manga? Super Ska Master, can you name one?
Sure, the manga is not original, but the way Oda Eichiro deliver the story is interesting and successfully attract millions of fans. Because of this aspect, the manga title One Piece really deserve rating 10/10.
One Piece is so great that anyone who hates it, hates sliced bread. If you dont find this manga amusing after spending an hour on it, you get your money!! Wowzors! Maybe its art is the greatest thing you ever see, maybe it storyline is so typical you swear you were reading dragon ball z, or even maybe its so overrated that it cant get any higher. But One Piece has one thing most other manga that are underrated dont have, that is awesomeness, everything even though you might think is plain dull or unfunny in other mangas just goes well into a mixture of greatness in this manga!! I think this was what the person who created READ OR DIE was reading when he/she created it.
I cant understand why some people find it bad. And even insult the art itself. I find the art simple and pleasant to look at. Not too messy to the point where i cant understand anything.
I couldnt care more about the plot or wadeva because its too tiring to argue about things like that.
What this series has bought to me is a sense of fun and adventure I have not experienced in many other (action)mangas. Somehow. I just don't get tired of it. And that is what amazes me and I think its the same for most other people too.
I just like it =D
[color=red][edit by mod,Spoliers start 3rd paragraph down BEWARE] From the art to the story and the characters everything seems larger than life in this manga. And that's a great feeling! The author seems to have made it a general theme in this work where everything has been amplified and exaggerated to gigantic proportions. The artwork, while seemingly simple at first has many smaller details that other manga seem to leave out; for example the little crease next to a character's lips as he smirks gives it a little bit more life. The characters are all extremes of one kind or another and rarely strike a balance outside of major plot points. Even the locales are amazing and ridiculous which give it such a unique charm. Many critics of the series complain that it's too 'generic'.
"The story is generic at best. I don't see what's original about [insert shonen hero of a certain character class] wants to find [insert legendary item] so he can be best of [insert character class]."
Like Naruto, the general theme behind the story seems generic the way he gets there isn't. You can complain about originality but it's like the blinders on a horse, if you stop there you'll never see what's so great about the story, the characters, the setting and the grandeur of it all.
Another unfounded complaint I've seen is this;
"Love the 1st few volumes but good lord..has any character matured beyond Usopp's desire to have the Merry Go not be destroyed and Luffy developing Gears (ala DBZ powerups?)? The answer is no..this is a vry long very very similar manga from whence it began almost 10 years ago."
Hmm... let me think. Nami isn't just concerned about loot and treasure anymore as she has friends and family that she wants to protect. Sanji instead of working in the floating restaurant has decided to travel the world and see what kinds of food there is as well as developing strong relations with the entire crew. The characters did change from when they were first introduced, did they do a dramatic 180? No! The basis for good stories are characters rooted in a certain mindset that drives them to do things. Luffy's caring about his crew shows a deeper and more serious side of him. Another example from another manga would be Sasuke from Naruto. His primary drive is to defeat his brother where that drove him to betray his friends there is no impetus for this to happen in One Piece.
All in all a great manga with interesting characters, an amusing plot and an amazing, and consistent shock, theme.
Nah, i really love reading shounen but this one is not my taste. The drawing is surely the worst, but I also can't get any "wow"-feeling from the story nor the characters.
I won't rate it to bad since it has some very nice ideas in the plot, but as for me I don't want to read more of it.
Far from the normal plotlines in shounen manga these days, One Piece actually redefines the meaning to an adventure. Yes, the art is overly shounen and at some points it is incredibly cheesy, but still at its climatic points, One Piece beats any other comic I've read. Also, props to the author for actually doing his research (if you've paid attention you can see so much of the history, legends, modern literature, etc. incorporated in the manga). A definite must-read.
