His appearance and mannerisms resemble those of a chimpanzee, which becomes a recurring joke in the manga. Despite his short stature, similar to Sena's, Monta has large hands, long arms, impressive acrobatic skills, and great leaping ability, making him an effective receiver. He can even catch Hiruma's bullet passes with one hand. After making a spectacular catch for a touchdown, he often poses by rolling after the jump, kneeling, and pointing upwards with his index finger. He frequently attaches "Max" to almost everything he does, either as a suffix in Japanese or as a prefix in English, believing that one should give 100% effort in all endeavors. His nickname, Monta, originated from a misunderstanding when Sena mistook his name as Rai Montarou. Hiruma told him that the nickname was derived from Joe Montana, although Monta doesn't realize Joe Montana was a quarterback, not a wide receiver. Monta has a crush on Mamori and constantly tries to win her affection, but he usually fails because she pays more attention to Sena. His throwing and kicking skills are abysmal; his throws often go in a completely different direction than intended, and his kicks tend to hit someone on the head or break windows. Additionally, Monta struggles with grammar, once saying he would "restore his disgrace," which Hiruma corrected and humorously suggested someone teach him how to communicate properly. Despite being considered an idiot, Monta gives inspiring motivational speeches, especially to Sena. Whenever Sena feels defeated, Monta's pep talks encourage him to keep going.
