Akaba is the tight end for the Spiders and serves as the team's captain. He has a deep passion for music and frequently plays his electric guitar, often using musical metaphors to express his thoughts. During games, Akaba wears a blue eyeshield and introduces himself to Sena as "the real Eyeshield 21."
He was awarded MVP during the Fall Tournament when his team faced Oujou's Golden Generation. Although he received an offer to join the Teikoku team and initially accepted due to their strength and his father's transfer to Kansai, a disagreement with teammate Kotaro led him to reconsider and return to Bando. Because of the school's policy, Akaba had to sit out for six months from the start of the school year, meaning he couldn't play until the match against the Devil Bats. Instead, he acted as an advisor and instructor, teaching his teammates the blocking techniques he developed through extensive research.
After the game against Deimon, Akaba gives his blue eyeshield to Sena (in the anime, he returns Sena's original green eyeshield) and acknowledges that Sena deserves to be called "Eyeshield 21."
