The largest and strongest player in the Deimon American Football club, Kurita lives in a temple with his father, who is the director of a Buddhist sect. His father believed that eating a lot would help him grow big and strong, but it seems he overdid it with Kurita. True to his name, Kurita's head resembles a chestnut. He is incredibly kind-hearted and sweet-natured, and his heart is even bigger than his massive frame. Kurita became Sena's second friend after joining Deimon High School.
During games, Kurita shouts "Funnuraba!" as a kiai when exerting extra effort. Before Deimon, he attended Shinryuji school but was forced out because Kongo Agon was chosen for the special athletic scholarship instead of him. He then joined Deimon High along with Hiruma and Musashi. Like Hiruma, Kurita is passionate about American football and tries to encourage others to join, though not as aggressively as Hiruma.
Kurita can get so enthusiastic that he sometimes starts morning practice as early as 2:00 AM. His "apprentice" is Komusubi, who trains with him whenever possible. Kurita's biggest dream is to compete in the Christmas Bowl. Despite being somewhat dim-witted, nearly revealing Sena’s secret identity, and accidentally destroying a small truck by hugging it, Kurita is immensely strong.
Whenever fights break out among the Deimon members, Kurita stops them by flattening everyone involved. Although he usually appears comical, he becomes dangerous when truly fired up. When Musashi rejoins the team, Kurita reveals an "alternate personality" during games. His face changes—his eyes inflame and enlarge, his eyebrows thicken, and his face tightens. In this form, he gains even more strength, though he can revert back quickly if something makes him happy, only to change again as the game resumes.
