Ringo Akai made her debut in the Japan-only video game Tokyo Mew Mew – Tojo Shin Mew Mew! – Minna Issho ni Gohoshi Suru Nyan. Unlike her fellow team members, Ringo doesn't have animal DNA integrated into her own. Instead, she uses a Mew Aqua necklace passed down from her late mother to combine her DNA with that of her pet Humbolt penguin, Yuki. Her mother has passed away, and her father's whereabouts are unknown; thus, Ringo resides with her older brother, Mashio.

She undergoes transformation into a Mew Mew after Quiche transforms her pet penguin into a Chimera Anima. Ringo is 11 years old.

Beyond the video game where she first appeared, Ringo has only shown up in the Petite Mew Mew manga story.
