Ichigo was an ordinary 13-year-old junior high student who went on a date with Aoyama Masaya until her DNA mysteriously merged with that of an Iriomote Wildcat. Now, she is the "leader" of a group of girls whose DNA has also been fused with endangered species. This group is called Tokyo Mew Mew. Their mission is to save the world from Chimera Animas, aliens, and their leader, Deep Blue. Initially, Ichigo wanted nothing to do with the "Mew Project," preferring to spend time with her crush, Masaya. Eventually, she reluctantly accepts her destiny, understanding what she is (a Mew) and the importance of her task.
Ichigo embodies some traits typical of a magical girl protagonist: sweet and caring, shy around her love interest, prone to overlooking things more perceptive and intelligent people can see, and overly excited when mad or enthusiastic. She reacts angrily whenever someone close to her is hurt and dislikes being treated like an object, as seen in her interactions with Kishu. In Masaya's presence, Ichigo tends to daydream and blushes, often acting impulsively due to her confused feelings. Many times, she prioritizes her relationship over saving the world. Overall, she is friendly and willing to give second chances to those she likes.
She receives the DNA of an Iriomote Wildcat. Later, she starts behaving like a house cat instead of a wildcat. Remembering a dream sequence where a cat jumped into her body during the injection, she realizes something significant has occurred.
As the story progresses, her cat DNA increasingly overtakes her human DNA. When excited or nervous, she grows cat ears and a tail. If extremely nervous or excited, she transforms into a cat. In the anime, kissing someone turns her into a cat, and another kiss returns her to normal. Her crush, Masaya Aoyama, and Ryou Shirogane (as Alto), along with Pudding Fong on one occasion, save her multiple times.
Transformation: Mew Mew Strawberry, Metamorphosis!
Attack: Ribbon Strawberry Check! (Eps. 1-14); Ribbon Strawberry Surprise! (Eps. 15-52); Ribbon Aqua Drops! (Eps. 25 & 43 only)
Kisshu saves Ichigo and nearly gets killed. After Kisshu leaves Earth forever, Masaya picks up Ichigo, thinking she is dead, but revives her with a kiss.
In the English dub, Mew Mew Power, Ichigo's name was changed to Zoey Hanson, and in the Italian dub, Ichigo's name was changed to Strawberry Momomiya.
