More questions and less answers....pretty good I guess.
But why does the author of the manga make some of the characters so unbelievably stupid!?!? Yeah so an alien race came out of nowhere and is now committing genocide on all of humanity......so lets just break from the one guy who is able to kill these things and just go home and act like nothings happening, yeah that's fucking smart!
And people in real life are geniuses, right? Oku nails what human typical behaviour is like, full of retarded people doing retarded things, acting shallow and cowardly most of the time with only a few rising above it.
I can't believe people are still questioning Oku's depiction of people, while we're at over 300 chapters into the manga! The point of this manga is not answers about black balls and aliens, that is peripheral to the main story which is about human behaviour. The very first fucking opening panel of the manga spells it out to you: 21st century people are douchebags.
Gantz is an exploration of ordinary people in extraordinary situations, and I've found most of it very true to life. Most of the past gantz players (and all of the citizens of various cities) acted confused, scared and selfishly. In fact, the more heroic characters are the ones that are unrealistic. Not that being good is unrealistic but they do it to a ridiculously noble degree. Some of the main 'good' characters have been explored at depth, showing how people struggle to do the right thing, but there's also a few like Kaze who are just pure goodness without any flaws and too shonen for my liking.
Let's be real here. If you were caught up in a large scale devastating incident like a terrorist attack, you wouldn't stick close to the police (or Kurono in this case) who seem to attract danger. The first and main priority for you would be to go find missing friends and family.
I just typed too much.
Sure the average person is dumb as shit but the author of Gantz just takes his characters to a whole new level. For example before the invasion happened you saw on the news that the US was getting destroyed. Now the average person no matter what his IQ level is would be glued to the TV if the destruction of the worlds only superpower was taking place right before there eyes on the news (9-11 is a perfect real life example, during 9/11 the whole world was glued to the TV screen). But the characters in Gantz had so much apathy towards the situation that it became annoying and unrealistic rather than clever and ironic.
The author of Gantz doesn't take the average person and put him in extraordinary situations (well at least not in the later chapters) He just takes the average person and drops their IQ's 50 points then puts them in a life or death situation.
And last but not least if there was an earthquake then maybe I would try to go home and find my family rather than stick with FEMA. But if a genocidal alien race capable of destroying a country in a few hours came down to my planet and starting fucking shit up then I would stick with FEMA rather than break off and give myself a certain death.
