The characters are where the magic happens. Our protagonist, despite being a bit silly and innocent, possesses a charm that piques the interest of the main love interest (ML). On the contrary, he's also incredibly intelligent and resourceful, not easily taken in by others, except for the ML, of course. The way he navigates and manipulates schemes is both fascinating and unique to his character. His occasional naivety is due to a tricky war god, adding an amusing layer to the story.
As for the ML, he starts off as a detached and ascetic immortal, but his transformation into a lovable, jealous figure trying to win affection through cunning tactics is hilarious to witness. His character development is a delightful read.
Now, onto the plot. Politics and power struggles aren't exactly my forte, but they were engaging enough not to make the story boring. The plot had a good flow, with unexpected twists that kept me hooked, and no glaring inconsistencies.
In summary, this novel is a standout gem, perfect for binge-reading and revisiting. It's a captivating read that won't disappoint.
Initially, the title gave off a mature and perhaps intense vibe, hinting at a potential non-consensual relationship, which made me hesitant to dive in. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find a well-developed story where the protagonist, an adult man, displayed maturity and thoughtful consideration. Although the naivety and obliviousness of the main character added a comical touch, it was refreshing to read about someone who didn't simply act on impulse.
The tension between the two characters was electrifying, even from the early stages when they were cautious of each other. I appreciated the professor background of the MC, which contributed to his grounded and sophisticated personality. The jealousy scenes and longing they shared were beautifully portrayed, making them adorable as a couple. Their relationship felt genuine, evolving beyond simple misunderstandings that could easily be resolved, making their connection all the more engaging.
Huo Wujiu, the主角, was a standout character. Despite his disability, he didn't let it limit him, which was inspiring. I enjoy novels that incorporate diverse characters, and the portrayal of Wujiu's situation was handled admirably. The way Wujiu openly expressed his love for Suizhou, despite societal disapproval, was heartwarming.
Towards the end, the pacing did slow down slightly, but that was more due to my personal circumstances than the book's quality. The political aspects were well-integrated, though not my primary interest. The MC's transformation into the cruel yet compassionate prince was a delightful subplot.
The villains were rather one-dimensional, but their tragic backgrounds added depth to the story. The conflicts were resolved relatively quickly, but I appreciated the emotional depth they brought to the narrative.
A minor issue was the translation, which was not the author's fault. The translator seemed to release chapters in small, delayed increments, causing frustration among readers. While I understand the need for compensation, it felt like a monetization strategy that detracted from the reading experience.
Overall, I highly recommend this novel, especially for those who enjoy romance and historical stories. It might not cater to everyone's taste, but for those who appreciate a well-crafted plot and relatable characters, it's definitely worth a read!
I felt compelled to leave a review because I noticed some readers might miss out on additional content that contributes to the sweeter endings. So, if you're interested in those extra elements, be sure to explore them as well!
The novel stands out as a heartwarming, slow-burning historical romance between a feeble prince, a talented modern history professor who excels in court intrigue, and a recovering overpowered general whose affection deepens and jealousy intensifies throughout. While there are conflicts, they don't create intense dramatic tension. Misunderstandings between the main couple are kept minimal, setting it apart from other works like HSAV.
As for additional content, I highly recommend reading all 13 extras, as they effectively tie up loose ends and address fan wishes for character development. Here's a spoiler-free list of the extras:
1. Two afterstories
2. Eight extras focusing on the MC and ML's journey, with historical implications
3. Two extras exploring the relationship between Lou Wanjun (het side pairing) and Nie Cong
4. A final short extra dedicated to the MC's pretend concubines, Xu Du and Gu Changyun
Make sure to delve into these extras for a more complete experience.
I resorted to using Google Translate as a temporary solution due to my impatience 😴, but I'll definitely stick with the official English version for a more accurate understanding of the story 😅. So far, up to chapter 51, I've been thoroughly enjoying the revisits, especially the sweet moments between the main characters as their love grows. It's truly touching.
I've been re-reading parts of it, and it feels like a dream come true to comprehend everything without relying on guesses, hah! If anyone has recommendations for similar stories with a similar vibe, I'd love to explore more titles. "Coldxcold" has left me in stitches with its humor.
Huo Wujiu is my favorite character – I find it difficult to articulate exactly why, but I just can't help liking him. The female lead, with her cuteness and intelligence, complements him perfectly.
I also enjoy the supporting couple dynamic between Nie Cong and Lou Wanjun. It adds an interesting layer to the story.
