Bugsy, known as Tsukushi in the original Japanese versions, is the Gym Leader responsible for the Hive Badge and resides in Azalea Town. He specializes in Bug-type Pokémon, with his name inspired by the word "bug."
In the anime, Bugsy is a fairly ordinary Gym Leader whose gym resembles a large greenhouse dome filled with forest-like interiors. His motto is "Whoever learns the rules of the Bug Pokémon learns to rule the Bug Pokémon." His signature Pokémon is Scyther, trained specifically to counter fire-type Pokémon. His other team members include a Spinarak skilled in String Shot and a particularly tough Metapod. When Ash challenges Bugsy's Pokémon Gym, his inexperienced Cyndaquil fails against Spinarak. Chikorita succeeds where Cyndaquil failed but falls to Metapod. Pikachu finishes off Metapod, and eventually, Cyndaquil returns to defeat Scyther, earning Ash the Hive Badge.
In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Bugsy is an androgynous-looking archaeologist investigating the Ruins of Alph and the Symbol Pokémon. His main Pokémon is Heracross, complemented by a Metapod. Later, he acquires a Kakuna and Scyther. Bugsy has a unique method of catching Pokémon, developed with Kurt, the Poké Ball master. This method involves an external capture net attached to his Poké Ball, which traps the Pokémon inside the net before it is automatically sucked into the Poké Ball. If the Pokémon escapes the Poké Ball, it remains trapped within the external net. However, when facing Suicune, Bugsy's efforts fail as Heracross cannot match Suicune's strength. Even his special capture net method fails when Suicune breaks free for the first time. Later, Bugsy is defeated by Sabrina during the Gym Leaders' Challenge.
