Butterfree is a lepidopteran Pokémon that looks like an anthropomorphic butterfly with a purple body. Unlike real insects, it has only two body segments and four light blue legs. The upper pair of its legs resemble small three-fingered hands, while the lower pair look like long feet without digits. Butterfree features two black antennae, a light blue snout with two fangs underneath, and large red compound eyes. Its wings are white with black venation, and in females, there are black oval scales on the lower wings, whereas these scales are white in males.
The wings of Butterfree are covered with poisonous scales that continuously fall off as it flies. Inhaling these scales can cause various status conditions. Butterfree uses this powder to defend Caterpie from bird Pokémon. This powder also repels water, allowing it to fly and gather honey even during rain. Butterfree can use its sensitive antennae to detect flower scents up to six miles away in search of nectar, which it carries using the hairs on its legs. It sometimes has territorial disputes with Cutiefly over flower fields. It also feeds on sap from trees pierced by Heracross, as seen in the anime. Butterfree is commonly found in temperate forests and jungles but has also been observed near oceans during its migratory breeding pattern.
Forms
Butterfree has a Gigantamax Form. In this form, its wings become bright and dark green with a white pattern. At the base of the wings is a fur-like circle attached to its back. Its antennae turn bright green and extend with tips that bend, surrounded by three red clouds. Its eyes glow bright red. Several green scales, formed from crystallized Gigantamax energy, float around it, acting as effective weapons capable of causing paralysis, poisoning, or sleep. Gigantamax Butterfree disperses these scales using powerful winds generated by each wing flap, strong enough to lift a 10-ton truck.
Evolution
Butterfree evolves from Metapod and is the final form of Caterpie.
