Ekans is a purple, snake-like Pokémon. Its eyes, underside, the thick stripe around its neck, and rattle are yellow. Ekans has three pairs of black lines circling its body, along with another line that connects to each slit-pupiled eye and curves towards its nose. It has a large mouth with a round, pink tongue and no visible teeth. A newborn Ekans's bite is painful but not venomous. This Pokémon grows longer as it ages.
Ekans inhabits grassy savannas and plains, moving stealthily through the grass. It can also be found in forests and desolate wastelands, where it preys on eggs from Pidgey and Spearow nests, but will strike other prey from behind. By flicking its tongue out, it detects danger and the scent of prey. Its jaw can detach to swallow large prey, though such a meal might make Ekans too heavy to move or cause it to faint if it gets stuck. At night, it wraps itself around tree branches to rest. If not in a tree, it coils up, a position allowing it to defend itself from all directions. In the second movie, it shows some swimming abilities. In Generation I, Glare was its signature move.
