Shigeru is a character around the same age as Satoshi, though he's slightly older, likely due to their height difference. They were childhood friends and neighbors, but drifted apart upon discovering their passion for Pokémon. The video game establishes that their rivalry becomes a central theme at the series' beginning. Like in games, manga, and anime, Shigeru is depicted as an overconfident and arrogant trainer, his knowledge stemming from being Professor Okido's grandson. He consistently stays a few steps ahead of Satoshi, much to Satoshi's frustration.
Initially, Shigeru comes off as an arrogant show-off, but his personality evolves as he matures. In later parts of the series, both in anime and games, he transforms into a nicer and more humble individual. Throughout most of the Kanto and Johto League sagas, he and Satoshi maintain a fierce rivalry. However, this rivalry wanes after a significant turning point. After his devastating loss at the Indigo Plateau Pokémon League, where Satoshi finished significantly ahead, Shigeru's attitude towards Satoshi changes. His approach to Pokémon training matures; he starts traveling alone to reestablish himself as a trainer.
Their rivalry peaks at the Johto League Silver Conference semi-finals, with both trainers giving it their all, and Satoshi narrowly winning. Following his defeat, Shigeru decides to pursue a career in Pokémon research instead of competing for the same goals as Satoshi. Though no longer rivals, Shigeru continues to motivate Satoshi, sometimes scolding him for overconfidence, particularly during the Orange League and Battle Frontier. In essence, Shigeru inspires Satoshi to embark on new journeys across various regions like Johto and Sinnoh. Despite his frequent absences, Shigeru remains a crucial character and one of Satoshi's most valued friends. He's set to make more appearances in the Diamond and Pearl Saga, balancing roles as both a Pokémon trainer and researcher. He guest-stars in episode forty-five of the Diamond and Pearl series, aiding Professor Rowan and his team in preserving endangered Shieldon.
