Platinum is the central female character in the DP series, known by her title Lady Berlitz. Her first name was a closely guarded secret until the narrative reached Canalave City. Throughout the story, there were moments when her name was almost revealed, but it was always obscured by other speech bubbles or drowned out by surrounding sounds. This intentional secrecy was to coincide with the release of the third sequel to Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, which would use her first name as its title.
She hails from the distinguished Berlitz family, a wealthy Sinnoh clan with over two centuries of scholarly excellence. A family tradition involves climbing Mt. Coronet to gather a special material for crafting an accessory adorned with the family crest. Like her father, Sir Berlitz, she has worked with Professor Rowan, gaining extensive knowledge about Pokémon before embarking on her journey.
Characterized as proud and sometimes arrogant, Platinum initially comes across as spoiled, preferring luxurious accommodations. She believed revealing her name to those deemed beneath her was unnecessary, following her butler Sebastian's teachings. Consequently, she refused to share her name with Dia and Pearl, whom she mistakenly thought were her bodyguards due to a misunderstanding. However, beneath this facade, she possesses a childlike innocence and can be quite goofy at times. As she faced various adventures alongside Dia and Pearl, she grew to appreciate their presence, sharing victories like the Super Contest and eventually addressing them by their first names after Veilstone City.
When Sir Berlitz became a victim of Team Galactic's false ransom, Platinum rushed to Canalave City to find him, where she learned the truth about Dia and Pearl’s real identities—a secret they kept to preserve their bond. This revelation deeply affected her, leading her to isolate herself. After a restless night dreaming of the boys’ demise, she decided to continue their friendship. She revealed her full name to them, acknowledging her own deceit, marking a shift from client-bodyguard relations to genuine friendship.
Since childhood, Platinum has read at least ten books daily, making her highly knowledgeable. This reflects her association with Uxie, the Knowledge Pokémon, and the virtue she represents. Initially mistaken for a professional tour guide by Dia and Pearl, she believes practical experience trumps theoretical knowledge, fueling her desire to explore gym battles, contests, and more. Her genuine interest and enthusiasm make her easy to get along with, even befriending Cynthia, who taught her battling skills in Eterna.
Her relationship with Pearl was rocky initially; his hot temper clashed with her arrogance. Despite frequent arguments, he admired her perseverance and often helped her despite complaints. Dia, harboring a secret crush, recognized her true nobility from the start, supporting her unconditionally. Although seemingly weak at first, Platinum quickly proved herself, conquering six gyms in just 25 days. Her rapid growth as a trainer earned respect, including from Byron, as she voiced her resolve against Team Galactic. Her success stems from applying advice and experiences practically, drawing inspiration from diverse sources such as Dia and Pearl’s comedy routines, her Great Marsh ordeal, and even slot machines in Veilstone’s Game Corner.
