Wattson lives in Mauville City and specializes in Electric-type Pokémon. Defeating him grants the trainer the Dynamo Badge. His English name originates from the unit of power, "watt," while his Japanese name likely references Nikola Tesla. An elderly man, Wattson is nearly always seen with a smile.
His gym features several electric doors and trainers, each door activated by stepping on a switch. The puzzle is relatively straightforward compared to the challenges posed by the next Gym Leader, Flannery. Upon defeating Wattson, he rewards you with TM34: Shockwave, an electric move guaranteed to hit its target.
In the Pokémon anime, Wattson enjoys a good laugh, offering all visitors, including gym challengers, a roller coaster ride culminating in a battle against a mechanical Raikou. Interestingly, Ash triumphs over Wattson using only his Pikachu, which is unusual since Electric-type moves are not very effective against Electric-type Pokémon. Initially disheartened and considering retirement from his role as Gym Leader, Wattson regains his spirit after aiding in defeating Team Rocket. It turns out that Pikachu's electric attacks were temporarily supercharged when it destroyed the mechanical Raikou, enabling it to overpower Wattson's Pokémon. Hoping for a fair rematch, Ash attempts to return the Dynamo Badge but Wattson insists he keep it, acknowledging his own need for further training.
This training proves beneficial, as Wattson and Ash meet again later in the series for a rematch. This time, Wattson's Manectric defeats Ash's Torkoal, showcasing his improved skills and dedication.
