Shisu was Gambino's lover and the adoptive mother of Guts. She first encountered the newborn Guts under a withered tree, surrounded by hanged bodies and covered in blood and mire. Shisu took him in to fill the void left by her recent miscarriage. Although Gambino allowed her to do as she wished, he and his mercenaries saw Guts as a bad omen.
When Guts turned three, Shisu was dying from an unknown plague. In her final moments, she held onto Guts' right hand and called out his name before passing away. Despite his cold and arrogant demeanor, Gambino deeply loved Shisu, and her death intensified his resentment towards Guts, whom he blamed for bringing a "cursed heritage" that led to his lover's demise.
It was said that Shisu became mentally unstable after her miscarriage. However, her kind heart was evident in her decision to raise Guts as if he were her own son.
