Griffith is the charismatic leader and founder of the Band of the Hawk. Exceptionally charismatic, intelligent, and handsome, his prowess with a sabre and tactical genius have earned him and his band a reputation for invincibility. This allowed him to gain favor with the Midland King during the century-long war between Midland and the Empire of Chuder.
Griffith is a highly controversial figure. Throughout the series, he commits several heinous acts, which leaves it up to the reader to decide whether he is an antagonist or a deuteragonist. According to interviews, series creator Kentaro Miura viewed Griffith as the latter. After certain events, Griffith adopts a new persona—cold, logical, and untouchable by those who threaten his interests. His true nature remains enigmatic, as he appears emotionally distant both to the audience and within the story, save for an occasional phantom heartbeat.
