Farnese is a noblewoman who once led the Holy See's ceremonial guard, known as the Holy Iron Chain Knights. Traditionally, this role has been held by a woman, and Farnese was appointed to it during her time at the convent where her father, Federico Vandimion, had sent her.
With tendencies towards pyromania, and possibly pyrophilia, Farnese would often burn things she disliked with a maniacal fervor. Her lack of empathy, stemming from a troubled upbringing, led her to hunt down and burn supposed witches and pagans at the stake, satisfying a hidden sadistic pleasure she struggled to suppress.
Her faith was shattered following the devastation of Albion and the events surrounding Griffith's reincarnation. Along with Serpico, she left her position within the Holy See. Seeking a deeper understanding of the world, she chose to follow Guts. Over time, Farnese transformed into a more compassionate individual. She began studying witchcraft under Schierke's guidance and developed a crush on Guts, which became evident in chapters 287 and 288 of the manga.
Farnese primarily serves as Casca's caretaker and rarely participates in battles. Both she and Casca were given enchanted silver chainmail shirts and short swords for protection against astral plane creatures. During Ganishka's raid on Vritanis, Farnese also received three snake-like homunculi created by Schierke from thorn vines, which she controls remotely using a vine ring.
