When Sapphire first met Ruby, she challenged him—they both agreed to travel through Hoenn and reunite after 80 days to see if she could defeat all the Gyms and if he could win every Pokémon Contest.
Their challenge was put on hold when they joined forces to stop the chaotic Kyogre and Groudon. Eventually, they only had one day left to complete the final Gym and Contest.
Sapphire is in love with Ruby. Even after they confessed their feelings for each other, she gets frustrated with Ruby's constant avoidance of the topic.
