Red is a primary character in the manga series Pokémon Adventures. His initial Pokémon was a Poliwag, which evolved into a Poliwhirl when saving him from drowning before the story began, and then evolved once more into a Poliwrath in Buzz off, Electabuzz!.
Red's unique skill, as described by Professor Oak, is Pokémon battling. Therefore, he is known as the "Fighter" (戦う者 Fighter). In later adventures, Red has been regarded as a leader among the Pokédex holders, second only to Professor Oak.
Red wears a red jacket, black undershirt, a red and white cap, and blue jeans. From the Yellow chapter onwards, he also wears a black bandana around his knee. Red is highly competitive, especially with his rival, Green. They both vowed to become strong trainers and share both a close friendship and a strong rivalry.
In the Red, Green & Blue chapter, Red is the main protagonist, and his primary rival is Green. At the start of this saga, Red is seen showing off his catching skills to some children but leaves when they mention Professor Oak and his grandson. He encounters Team Rocket Grunts discussing Mew, finds it, and sees Blue already battling it with a Charmander. Seeing Green quickly recall his Pokémon angers Red, leading him to send out his own Poliwhirl, who is easily defeated. After receiving advice from Green, Red decides to visit Professor Oak. By the end of the RGB chapter, Red becomes the 9th triennial Pokémon League Champion.
In the Yellow chapter, Red receives an invitation to battle Bruno of the Elite Four at Mt. Moon. During the battle, Bruno pauses to let Diglett and Dugtrio pass, and Agatha uses her mind control powers on him. Red is then confronted by Lorelei and Agatha, who want him to join their quest to eliminate humanity for Pokémon's sake. When he refuses, Lorelei freezes him in ice, making everyone believe he has disappeared. Only Pika escapes to Professor Oak’s lab, where he teams up with Yellow.
In the Gold, Silver & Crystal chapter, Red first appears in a photo at the Day Care Center showing him as a previous winner of the Pokémon League. Offered the position of Viridian City Gym Leader, he declines due to injuries from being frozen. He learns from Green where to heal his wounds and recuperates at the springs in Mt. Silver with Green's Charizard and Blue's Blastoise, meeting Sabrina there. Later, he arrives in time to save Green, Brock, and Erika from a train crash.
In the FireRed & LeafGreen chapter, Red wears new attire including a FireRed jacket, hat, and shoes, along with his previous jeans. Meeting Green at Professor Oak's lab, they find messages asking them to leave their Pokédexes and head to Vermilion City. There, they board the Seagallop Ferry to the Sevii Islands, encountering Deoxys attacking Blue. They confront the new Team Rocket Admins and discover that Professor Oak has been kidnapped again.
In the Emerald chapter, Red, along with other characters, are transported as statues to the Battle Frontier. Towards the end, he and others are liberated by Emerald with Jirachi's help. Free again, they fight Guile Hideout. In the aftermath, Red and other Pokédex holders participate in the Battle Dome tournament, concluding with Emerald claiming the Tactics Symbol.
Main Team:
Poli (Jp: ニョロ Nyoro) is Red's first Pokémon. Initially a Poliwhirl, he was caught as a Poliwag and evolved to save his Trainer from drowning. Saur (Jp: フッシー Fusshī) is Red's second main Pokémon, given as a Bulbasaur by Professor Oak. He evolves into Ivysaur and Venusaur during battles against Team Rocket.
Pika (Jp: ピカ Pika) is Red's third main Pokémon, captured in Pewter City after stopping its mischief. Initially disobedient, Pika becomes one of Red's most trusted team members. Snor (CY: Lax, Jp: ゴン Gon) is Red's fourth main Pokémon, captured on Route 12. As of PS272, he is level 89 with an Impish Nature.
Vee (Jp: ブイ Vui) is Red's fifth main Pokémon, genetically modified by Team Rocket to evolve into different forms. After healing trauma, Vee permanently evolves into Espeon. Aero (Jp: プテ Pte) is Red's sixth main Pokémon, given by Giovanni as Old Amber. Resurrected to help Blaine combat Team Rocket's Moltres, he is level 85 with a Hasty Nature.
In Pokémon: The Origin, Red gets his design from the remakes of the original games, Fire Red/Leaf Green. He chooses Charmander as his starter, coinciding with his name. Like the games and manga, his rival is Green, who picks Squirtle instead of Bulbasaur.
