In the anime, Mikuri (Wallace) first appeared in "Our Cup Runneth Over!" as a Contest Master in Sinnoh. After watching Ash and Dawn's practice match against each other, he invites Ash to enter the Wallace Cup with his Buizel. He also conducts a practice appeal in the episode using his Milotic for Ash and the others.
He makes further appearances in episodes titled "Staging a Heroes Welcome," "Pruning a Passel of Pals!," and "Strategy With a Smile!" acting as the judge for the Wallace Cup. Additionally, he awards Dawn the Aqua Ribbon following her victory at the Contest.
It is mentioned that, similar to the game, Wallace was once the Sootopolis City Gym Leader and later the Hoenn Champion. It was revealed in "Battling the Generation Gap!" that the Pokémon stylist Lila designed his outfit for Contests.
In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Wallace is the Sootopolis Gym Leader, alongside being a contest master and the protector of the Cave of Origin. He takes Ruby under his wing, much like Winona did for Sapphire. Despite initially aligning with Team Aqua, he possesses a strong sense of justice and is the first among the aligned Gym Leaders to renounce his loyalty, convincing Winona of the Magmas to do likewise.
It was disclosed in Volume 21 that Wallace had been the Hoenn League Champion who entered the Hall of Fame. However, he relinquished the title, expressing his desire to follow his mentor Juan's path of becoming a Gym Leader of his city. According to Steven, Wallace did not reveal to the director of the Pokémon Association that there was a second reason for his renouncement: his wish to stay close to Winona, the Fortree Gym Leader.
There appears to have been some form of relationship between him and Winona in the past, speculated by fans to be romantic. Although it remains unconfirmed whether Winona still harbors feelings for him, it is evident that Wallace still has feelings for her, based on their emotional farewell before they leave to fight Kyogre and Groudon in Volume 20.
Wallace regains the title of Champion after Steven foresees his own demise in the upcoming battle between Groudon and Kyogre.
Wallace typically travels in an "Air Car," capable of traversing both land and air. He is also the only Hoenn Gym Leader known to nickname his Pokémon.
