Mew is a pink, bipedal Pokémon with mammalian characteristics. It boasts a rounded, wide snout, triangular ears, and large, blue eyes. Its arms are short with three-fingered paws, and it has large hind feet adorned with oval markings on the soles. The tail of Mew is long and slender, ending in an ovoid tip. Its fur is exceptionally fine and thin, only visible under microscopic examination.
Mew exhibits a playful and childlike personality, demonstrating high intelligence, curiosity, shyness, playfulness, and even selflessness. It is believed to possess the DNA of every Pokémon within its body, leading scientists to theorize that Mew is the ancestor of all Pokémon species. This adaptable creature can levitate and teleport, use almost all known moves regardless of type, and transform into any known Pokémon. Additionally, it can render itself invisible at will and create a protective energy orb around itself, which can appear in various colors like green, yellow, and pink.
According to records from Kanto's Pokémon Mansion, Mr. Fuji discovered Mew deep in the jungle and named it. With fellow scientists, he extracted some of Mew's DNA and used it to create a modified clone aiming for ultimate power, resulting in the Legendary Pokémon Mewtwo. Due to its invisibility, few have ever seen Mew, causing some scientists to declare it extinct. However, sightings continue to be reported, confirming its existence. Mew tends to reveal itself to individuals who are pure-hearted and eager to see it.
In the radio drama "The Birth of Mewtwo" related to the Pokémon Series, it was revealed that Jessie's mother, Miyamoto, first recorded Mew's cry in a forest 20 years prior to the series' events. Ancient people revered Mew for its protection, composing songs in its honor and believing it appeared annually with the sunrise. Eighteen years after Miyamoto's encounter, Mew was rediscovered at sunrise atop a high mountain. In the episode "In the Palms of Our Hands! (JN134)," Mew displayed the ability to split itself and transform into multiple Pokémon simultaneously. It also showed a strong rivalry with its clone, Mewtwo, as depicted in "Mewtwo Strikes Back (M01)."
