Despite the group passing through Hearthome City twice, first in "Dawn's Early Night" and then again in "Arriving in Style!", the Hearthome Gym remained closed with no sign of the Gym Leader. Melissa, known as Fantina, left a note explaining she was embarking on a journey for some time and not to search for her. She was reportedly creating an entirely new battle style.
She eventually reappeared in "Playing The Leveling Field!" where she battled Ash and Zoey. Fantina had a habit of breaking into dance frequently and occasionally mixed in French phrases like "s'il vous plaît." It was also disclosed that she faced Alan twice, with him winning the second match. In "Aiding the Enemy," it was revealed that Paul managed to defeat her as well.
Ash encountered Fantina when he returned to Hearthome City in "Barry's Busting Out All Over!" and challenged her again in "Shield with a Twist!" where he emerged victorious and earned the Relic Badge.
In "Gotta Get a Gible!" it was revealed that Melissa (Fantina) had once more left her Gym, causing Barry to take a number to await his chance to battle her upon her return.
Melissa (Fantina) appeared from DP174 to DP177 as a guest judge for the Grand Festival.
