Anime: Anabel appeared in the episodes "Talking a Good Game!" and "Second Time's the Charm!".
Anabel has the empathic ability to sense the emotions of living beings and communicate with them, a skill she's had since childhood. This power is reminiscent of Yellow from Pokémon Adventures, though other characters do not consider these abilities psychic but rather a finely tuned sense of empathy. Regardless, she is still depicted as a Psychic-type specialist. She shares a strong bond with her Pokémon, referring to them as "my friend" when sending them into battle. Despite her efforts, Ash and May were unable to learn her empathetic skills, as their Pokémon did not respond to them.
Ash and his friends were initially surprised to find out Anabel is a girl; upon arriving at her house, she declined to change her wet clothes in front of them. When Ash asked if it was because May was present, Anabel clarified that it was simply because she is female.
In their first match, Ash lost to Anabel after her powerful Alakazam defeated two of his Pokémon consecutively, overpowering both Corphish and Tauros. In a rematch, Ash triumphed by using the same strategy he used previously. During their farewell, it was evident that Anabel had developed a crush on Ash.
Manga: Anabel is recognized as the most formidable Frontier Brain and leads the group. Her signature Pokémon is Raikou.
Anabel leads the resistance against Guile Hideout's attack but falls prey to one of his traps, giving him control over the Battle Tower. Emerald attempts to scale the Tower to stop the villain, but due to the emergency, the Tower's automated trainer system activates, forcing Emerald to fight his way to the top.
Emerald succeeds but encounters a terrifying sight at the summit - Anabel, brainwashed and entirely under Guile Hideout's control. She ruthlessly defeats him in battle and then tries to kill him before he is rescued by Sapphire and Ruby.
Guile Hideout then appears, threatening to kill Anabel unless he receives the information he demands about Jirachi.
