Magikarp is a fish-like Pokémon featuring large, heavy reddish-orange scales. It possesses big, vacant eyes and pink lips. Its pectoral and tail fins are white. On its back sits a stiff, three-peaked yellow fin that resembles a crown; an identical fin can be found on its underside. Magikarp also has long barbels, which are white on females and pale-yellow on males. A Magikarp that has lived for a long time can utilize its immense splashing power to leap high enough to scale mountains. It also boasts a robust immune system, enabling it to survive in the most polluted waters. However, trainers often overlook it due to its perceived weakness: even during battle, it tends to flop around aimlessly. It is believed that the ancestors of Magikarp were significantly stronger than their modern counterparts, prompting scientists to study this species.
Magikarp can be found in various water bodies such as lakes, rivers, and ponds. Due to its poor swimming ability, it usually resides downstream. It frequently uses Splash to leap out of the water, making it an easy target for predators like Pidgeotto and Pidgeot. Frillish is another known predator of Magikarp.
In Hoppy Town, there are at least 31 unique pattern varieties of Magikarp, with scales coming in colors such as gray, black, white, purple, pink, violet, apricot, and brown. These patterns can be grouped based on how the Magikarp looks while still small; a specific pattern emerges as it grows larger. The patterns one can catch depend on the type of Old Rod used; better rods allow for catching more pattern groups. Residents of Hoppy Town train their Magikarp to jump the highest to compete in a series of Leagues for prizes.
