Wartortle is a bipedal, indigo-colored reptilian Pokémon resembling a turtle. It has brown eyes, dark blue streaks on each cheek, and two sharp teeth extending from its upper jaw. Its hands feature three claws, and its feet have pointed toes. On either side of its head are feather-like ears covered in pale blue fur. Wartortle's body is encased in a brown shell with a pale yellow underside, separated by a thick white rim. Older Wartortles may exhibit scars or algae growth on their shells. A thick, wavy tail, also covered in light blue fur, protrudes from the bottom of the shell and cannot be fully retracted. The tail fur darkens with age and symbolizes longevity and good fortune, making Wartortle popular among the elderly.
Due to its larger size compared to Squirtle and its broader shell, Wartortle finds it more challenging to walk on land and maintain balance in water. To swim at high speeds, Wartortle uses its furry ears and tail as both rudders and balancing aids. It can store air within its fur for prolonged underwater dives. When hunting, Wartortle hides in water before surprising its prey. According to the anime, Wartortle can live in colonies on islands, but it prefers habitats like freshwater ponds and lakes.
