Rockruff is a four-legged, canine Pokémon. It primarily sports a light brown color with darker brown accents on its muzzle, paws, and ear tips. Its large blue eyes, button ears, short muzzle featuring a triangular pink nose, and small tufts of fur on each cheek contribute to its distinctive appearance. Around its neck, there's a ruff of grayish-white fur adorned with dark brown pebbles. The dark brown markings on its paws extend into thin points at the wrists and ankles. Rockruff has a grayish-white tail that curls tightly over its back, covered in fluffy fur.
This Pokémon possesses an excellent sense of smell and can recall any scent after just one sniff. There are stories about it reuniting with its Trainer after becoming lost by following even the faintest traces of scent. Rockruff has lived alongside humans since ancient times. Due to its friendly nature and ease of bonding with Trainers, it is often recommended for beginner Trainers. However, raising Rockruff is said to be challenging, leading some Trainers to abandon it when they find it difficult to manage. This Pokémon is highly sociable and greets others by rubbing them with the rocks around its neck. As it ages, Rockruff becomes wilder and more independent. When close to evolving, it starts howling as the sun sets. It has been reported to leave its Trainer’s side and return once evolved. Despite becoming more aggressive as it matures, Rockruff never forgets its master’s kindness. Wild Rockruff travels in packs until it evolves. A tenacious Pokémon, it will persist until it outlasts stronger foes. Rockruff intimidates opponents by hitting the ground with the rocks on its neck. As mentioned in the anime, Rockruff trains itself by running around and attacks foes the moment they flinch. It is known to fight with Growlithe over territory.
