Phanpy is a small, horizon-blue elephant-like Pokémon. It boasts large, floppy ears that it uses as fans to cool itself down. Each ear has two red pads, and there's another on the bridge of its short trunk. This Pokémon has one nail on each of its four feet and a stubby tail.
The small trunk is both sensitive and strong. With an affectionate nudge of its snout, Phanpy can send a person flying. The power in its trunk is such that it could break any arm bones it strikes. Additionally, this little Pokémon can easily carry an adult human on its back.
Phanpy inhabits rocky areas. To create its nest, it digs a vertical pit near a riverbank. It marks its territory with its trunk to show ownership. In the early morning hours, when it's deserted, Phanpy uses its trunk to bathe in the river. Sometimes, groups of these Pokémon gather and thoroughly soak each other. Afterwards, they can be seen drying off near the river’s edge. This behavior stems from Phanpy’s insistence on cleanliness before settling down.
