Giratina is a large, gray, dragon-like Pokémon adorned with three golden half-rings on each side of its elongated neck. Its head features a gold crown-like structure with two sizable horns jutting out sideways. A thick black stripe runs down the center of its body, intersected by five red horizontal stripes. In its Altered Forme, it sports two massive ghostly black wings, each tipped with three red points resembling claws. These wings can morph as if made of liquid or gas. It has six robust legs ending in golden claws, and each leg bears two golden half-circles similar to those around its neck, resembling shackles. Its tail is marked with two band-like patterns. Giratina remains in its Altered Forme outside its home dimension, typically floating rather than walking.
This Pokémon is highly aggressive and territorial, fiercely protective of its domain. Legends suggest that Giratina inhabits a world opposite our own, occasionally appearing in ancient graveyards. As depicted in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Giratina possesses the ability to tear holes in reality, causing space-time distortions and driving Dialga and Palkia into frenzied states. This rift can also trigger Noble Pokémon to enter berserk Lord/Lady States. Giratina's strength is said to rival that of Dialga and Palkia. It was banished by Arceus for its violent tendencies, though the anime shows a gentler side when near humans. At one point, Giratina held a grudge against Arceus, even standing against it with human help, but after defeat and retreat, it began to change, protecting the universe from threats like Cyrus. Due to its violent nature, ancient people feared and covered up Giratina's history. The anime reveals Giratina can open portals through reflective surfaces and maintains balance between worlds. Titles include "banished Pokémon," "Arceus' shadow," and "Pokémon of Shadows."
Forms
Giratina can switch between its Altered and Origin Formes. In Origin Forme, it adopts a serpentine appearance. Its legs transform into golden-tipped spikes, with four additional spikes appearing near its tail's end. The six golden half-rings can now grip objects, each having a black ghostly tendril with a red spike at the tip. The horns now face backward, and the golden "crown" parts cover its mouth, splitting vertically like an insect's mandible when opened. The black vertical stripe fragments and runs along its body. Giratina can only assume Origin Forme in its home, the Distortion World, or when holding a Griseous Orb or Core. With sufficient power, it can maintain this form in the real world without items, potentially matching Arceus in strength. Giratina reaches full power in Origin Forme, always levitating in this state.
The Origin Forme is considered Giratina's true form, capable of traversing and controlling dimensions beyond time and space. While in this form, it can move through dimensions at will, reverting to Altered Forme due to gravity changes upon leaving the Distortion World. Giratina can turn into a shadow and merge the Distortion World with ours, as seen during the Spear Pillar events, although this risks destruction due to distortion.
