Gengar is a dark purple, bipedal Pokémon with a rounded body. It features red eyes, a wide mouth that typically forms a sinister grin, and pointed ears. Its back has numerous spikes, while its head sports smaller spikes resembling tufty fur. Gengar’s limbs are short, each hand and foot having three digits. It also possesses a small tail.
Gengar can perfectly blend into any shadow, making it extremely stealthy. However, its presence lowers the surrounding temperature by nearly 10°F (5°C) due to absorbing warmth. The anime depicts Gengar as capable of flying, possessing people and other Pokémon, creating illusions, and extending its tongue several meters.
Characterized as mischievous and sometimes malicious, Gengar delights in playing pranks and casting curses. It enjoys pretending to be someone's shadow before behaving erratically. When noticed, Gengar revels in its victim’s terror. Despite this, it can be loyal to a Trainer who treats it well. Evolving through trading, Gengar is rarely found in the wild but may inhabit caves and dark areas. It prefers urban environments like cities and back alleys during nighttime.
Forms
Gengar has two distinct forms: Mega Gengar and Gigantamax Gengar.
In its Mega form, parts of Gengar's body sink into the ground, its arms and tail elongate, and the lower portions turn reddish-purple. A third eye appears on its forehead, oval-shaped and yellow, enabling it to see into other dimensions. The spikes on its back increase and become sharper, additional spikes emerge on its hands and tail, and its ears lengthen and tilt backward.
Mega Gengar gains the ability to access other dimensions and becomes more vicious. It shows little interest in opponents unless they are perceived as prey. Its relationships become distorted due to Mega Evolution, leading it to desire taking and cursing anything in its path, even its own Trainer. It hides in another dimension to ambush its targets.
In its Gigantamax form, Gengar grows larger, with parts of its body sinking into the ground, leaving only the head, tail, and arms visible. Its color shifts from dark purple to light purple, and its eyes turn white with yellow sclera. Inside its mouth resembles a tunnel with a long purple tongue protruding. Three red clouds encircle the top of its head.
Rumored to lead not into its body but into the afterlife due to cursed energy, Gigantamax Gengar uses traps to steal lives. Standing near its mouth allows one to hear voices of their loved ones calling out.
Evolution
Gengar evolves from Haunter and is the final evolution stage of Gastly.
