Growlithe is a quadrupedal canine Pokémon. It has orange fur with black stripes along its back and legs. The fur on its muzzle, chest, belly, and tail is beige, as is an additional tuft of fur on top of its head. Growlithe's coat is notably longer on its chest and tail. It has gray eyes, a black nose, and large, round, triangular ears with beige interiors. Its forepaws have two visible claws, while its hind paws have three toes each. Each paw features a brown pad.
Growlithe is known for its friendly and loyal nature. It will bravely defend its Trainer and territory from harm, even if the enemy is larger or stronger. This Pokémon has been observed fighting Rockruff over territory. When it senses a threat, Growlithe fiercely barks, bites, and chases away the intruder. Otherwise, it remains obediently still until given an order. Archaeological evidence shows that Growlithe has shared a long history with humans, with bones found in Stone Age ruins. In the wild, it is commonly spotted in grassy plains.
This Pokémon possesses an exceptionally powerful sense of smell. If it detects an unfamiliar scent in its territory, it roars to scare off the intruder. It can discern the emotions of others through their scents and never forgets a smell. However, strong, unpleasant odors can temporarily disable its olfactory abilities, as depicted in the anime.
Forms
Growlithe has a regional variant: Hisuian Growlithe. In Hisui, this form has dark orange-red fur, while its mane and tail are light gray, and its muzzle is light tan. Its fur consists of igneous rock components. The mane covers its eyes and extends below its head, ending in three curls. Its ears are round and square, with light orange-red interiors. It sports a small horn on its head and a curly tail.
The soft, insulated fur of Hisuian Growlithe helps it endure the cold climate of Hisui. This Pokémon rarely uses its horn unless necessary due to its fragility. A pair of Hisuian Growlithe are vigilant when guarding their territory. Bonding with humans takes much longer for this variant because they have lived apart from humans for many years. Hisuian Growlithe evolved due to exposure to volcanic activity in the coastal highlands during early times in Hisui.
Evolution
Growlithe evolves into Arcanine. Similarly, Hisuian Growlithe evolves into Hisuian Arcanine.
