This act of excessive brutality shattered Guts' spirit and deeply affected his ability to trust others.
Under the command of Gambino, Donovan paid his superior to have access to Guts. Driven by his resentment towards Guts, Gambino agreed. That night, Donovan cornered Guts, revealing the transaction with Gambino, which further traumatized the young boy. This event not only instilled in Guts a profound aversion to physical contact but also created an internal conflict over being betrayed by his guardian.
During a mission with Gambino and his men, Guts witnessed Donovan mercilessly killing stragglers from the opposing force. Seizing the opportunity for revenge, Guts shot Donovan in the back and then fired another bolt into his open mouth before thrusting his sword down Donovan's throat, ending his life. However, this act did not provide Guts with any closure regarding Gambino's role in his suffering until a confrontation years later.
