Voltorb is a spherical Pokémon that looks like a Poké Ball with eyes but without the button. The upper half is red, while the lower half is white. Its resemblance to Poké Balls has led to speculation that it was created by exposure to an energy pulse. This theory is backed by the fact that its components do not occur naturally.
Voltorb is commonly found in power plants and areas with electric fields where it feeds. It was first discovered at the plant where modern Poké Balls were invented. Known for its volatile temperament, Voltorb will explode if agitated or even slightly bumped. Due to being frequently mistaken for a Poké Ball, it has reportedly zapped many humans.
Forms
Voltorb has a regional form known as Hisuian Voltorb. Like their modern counterparts, Hisuian Voltorb resembles the Poké Balls of their time period (made from Apricorns), featuring a wood grain pattern and a hole on top through which it releases stored electricity. Unlike modern Poké Balls, Hisuian Voltorb lacks a latch. Inside, they contain numerous seeds, though examining their interior is impossible due to the pitch-black conditions. Hisuian Voltorb has a distinctive red wooden unibrow.
Unlike Kantonian Voltorb, Hisuian Voltorb have friendly and excitable temperaments, often clustering around people and causing nuisances when they discharge. They are known to let out loud, uproarious laughs whenever they discharge. Hisuian Voltorb can store electric currents in its belly. There are tales of people temporarily plugging the holes of Hisuian Voltorb to prevent discharges before removing them from settlements. Despite their resemblance to Poké Balls, they have existed since ancient times, long before Poké Balls were invented.
Evolution
Voltorb evolves into Electrode. Hisuian Voltorb evolves into Hisuian Electrode.
