Berry Shirayuki is introduced as the main protagonist in "Tokyo Mew Mew a la Mode." In this series, Ichigo, the previous leader of the Mew Mews, has left for England to study abroad with her boyfriend Masaya. As a result, the twelve-year-old Berry becomes the sixth Mew Mew and temporarily assumes Ichigo's role as the group's leader. Berry is new to the area and commutes daily on an hour-long subway ride to attend a private middle school in the city.
Berry makes history by being the first Mew Mew infused with the DNA of two endangered species: the Andean Mountain Cat and the Amami Rabbit. This happens after she follows Ryou Shirogane to the Café Mew Mew to thank him for saving her from a dangerous fall, inadvertently enters the Mew Mews' headquarters, and runs through an experimental machine designed to infuse DNA into girls. Berry swiftly adapts to her new responsibilities as a Mew Mew. Like Ichigo, she receives a robot companion named R3000, which she renames Ucha. Ucha not only guides her in combat but also transforms into the wand she uses to execute attacks. As the "second strongest" Mew Mew, Berry becomes the primary target of the series' antagonists, the Saint Rose Crusaders.
Throughout "a la Mode," a secondary storyline develops around the budding romance between Berry and her childhood friend Tasuku. Every morning, Tasuku sneaks into Berry's room to hug her, a tradition that began after Berry's mother passed away and could no longer perform this daily ritual. As the series progresses, Berry realizes she has gradually fallen in love with Tasuku. This realization initially leaves her feeling confused.
