I figured ... he was probably too afraid to betray friend at the time. And so, he probably just injected him with the virus (or stabbed him), though can't say it was too cruel since I believe that Mon had just 2-3 years to live and it had already been 2 so ...

not very surprising since he was a friendship member, but there can be another reason as well

He probably was forced out of obligation to friend but didn't want to deep down I expect
