People complaining about Nanao most likely missed the point of everything so far.
Shunsui lot his brother and his brothers wife. And he made promises to both and those promises converge in protecting Nanao.
Thus its obvious shunsui made sure Nanao would never have to fight or be in some dangerous situation.
It also was foreshadowed in Shunsui/Ukitake VS Yamamoto fight where she had a huge freak out and Shunsui expressed regret of having brought her there.
Shunsui carried out his promise too well. She has never been injured. She never fought. She never experienced fear in battle.
By allowing Nanao to fight here and take the front (Which is yet again theatrical allusion with background and foreground of the stage)), Shunsui is actually trying to make peace with his regrets and allowing Nanao to graduate into being an adult.
Pretty much knowing her backstory it makes perfect sense that she reached her status through nepotism. The backstory part is pretty well written overall it still was a boring chapter, very anticlimactic like many mentioned.
Tbh Kubo should have splitt this into two chapters with some more text, focusing this one entirely on the flashback, adding some details, maybe expanding on Shunsui´s and Ukitake´s backstory and the next chapter could have been the conclusion.
However my personal assumption is he wrote himself into a corner with that dumb ability because he specifically wanted to imitate the legend of Susano, which is why Lile took the serpent form to represent the Yamatano Orochi, and Nanao the role of Susano with the yata mirror in her hands.
My assumption is that Kubo changed the roles, here and that Shunsui here is the Maiden that should get sacrificed.
However its boringly written in the grand scheme of Bleach.
