No matter how shitty it gets, there will always be millions of shipper girls and 14 year old thirsty kids who would still read this for pairings and fanservice, and claim it's the best manga of all time.
For eg, just see myanimelist ratings, more than 75% people put 5/5 or 4/5 no matter how shitty a chapter gets.
I would still read this to it ends, but this is faaar from my fav manga that it used to be.

My reasons for reading this:
1.) I have faith that Hiro can do better. After GMG, he did a much better arc Tartarus (not as great as people say it is, but was definitively good IMO)
2.) Fairy tail is my first anime (apart from Dbz, naruto and Pokemon which I watched when I was 10), it was the anime that got me into the world of manga and anime 5 years back, when I was 15. And no matter what others say, the first 120 episodes were epic IMO (actually enjoyed them for the most part, except for Natsu and Lucy lol), and the first 50 episodes were the best in any shounen by far(my opinion, don't bash)
3.) Because of reason 2, I have a personal attachment to fairy tail. I might seem as a hater, but what I actually want is for this manga to get better cause I legit care for it instead of accepting it as how it is, cause it's worse than GMG now TBH.
My problems with fairy tail now:
1.) Villains treated like utter shit. Hyped up to fail horrendously - Bradman killed by 3 regular punches after 25+ chapters of hype, are you kidding me? Actually all Spriggans except Serena (and then died -_-) and August were disappointing.
2.) Wasting God Serena and other GOI. They were hyped for more than 150 chapters and then had an off screen fight. At least it made Serena look epic, but wait, then he got one shotted to a character that needs no more hype.
3.) Characters who kept me to the series and were my favs were shitted on - Erza (used to be the best,she became......), Laxus, Jellal, lissana. I mean they really got their characters destroyed. Right now I only like Gray and Gajeel (not anymore if he's back) in the protagonist side.
4.) Plot holes on chapter 465. People say it's awesome cause of revelations and Zeref appearing. But it made the one good arc of fairy tail pointless, made Atlas flames look like a complete idiot and shitted on all the emotions showed by Mard Do you seriously think he was lying? The guy showed legit emotions for END as if he was a close friend, got angry when someone talked shit about END, almost cried in the end cause he failed to resurrect END and was ready to risk his life to resurrect him. And now you say they were lies? BS. To me is seemed as if mashima really planned on END being all that, then chickened out later.
I swear this is the worst arc of the manga. I would still read fairy tail, but I hate hiro for making an arc like this with the highest potential a shit.. I know he can do better, but he doesn't want to. He shits on his own manga and disrespects the sanity of his readers

I really do not get people like you or others complaining about fan service moments etc.
Even when i feel the direction Mashima takes is bad for story telling purposes i still have fun reading Fairy Tail because i decided what to expect from it.
After reading a little i concluded that is a manga with nice art and nice looking girls that show nice fanservice and some action sequences and fun designed villains as to not get bored and fun comedy moments.
Example everyone was raging about the pantie mention of that woman a few chapters back and how it made the situation look less serious and i was enjoying that moment as one of those random comedy snaps.
If you expect serious storytelling or even decent storytelling from Fairy Tail then i just can't get how diluted you are.
And don't start with that "But that arc was kind of good and i want other arcs to be more like..." BUUUUUUULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is because of these fucking delusion that we get so much butthurt 490 chapter in.
NO fucking arc was good when it comes to story elements. It was always some hyped villains that the only good thing about them was design and some ass-pulls fights and not much interesting connected story line but elements thrown left and right for the hell of it and so on and Mashima then pulling something of his ass as to make everything make sense etc.
The guy is an mediocre to bad story teller that just writes a young teen manga with fanservice for such teen and is continuing because he gets a decent pay check from it and he probably has fun just designing it.
Now if you all stop over analyzing the story and characters and all that and instead of hating the elements that actually making it deserve reading like comedy moments and fanservice and stupid pointless action and actually read it for those then you might just have fun reading a Fairy Tail chapter every week instead of frustration.
Fairy tail legit had good story telling for first 50 episodes and decent to 120 episodes with minimal fanservice and romance. I donno wtf you've been watching till now. Jellal was pulling the strings for many events till episode 42, played really important roles in Galina island. Laxus's rebellion was foreshadowed too, Ultear's betrayal leading/foreshadowing tenrou arc etc. It had legit good story telling, of you didn't like them I don't know how you got into fairy tail in the first place.
And nope, fanservice and romance kicked in later only. In the beginning, only Natsu-lissana and Jellal-Erza romance were there that too in minimal amounts. Fanservice was no where as prominent as now.
Read rave, he has decent story telling ability. Fairy tail first season (50) also had good story telling.
Fights actually made at least little sense in the past and were MUCH better than now.

You are the one at fault here, you lacked the skill to see it wasn't so great and now you assume that it was because there is no way you can believe you didn't have the ability to detect it. Well sorry but YOU DIDN'T.
This is what Fairy Tail always was. Go read the first 100 chapters again. Yeah at that point the fanservice was a little less but there was a little more comedy in it's place but the quality of storytelling and antagonist etc? SAME FUCKING SHIT.
The only arc that had a half decent conclusion was the one with Gray and frozen Deliora probably.

It's just some silly fighting fanservice shounen. The friendship ass-pulls are more relevant to give the heroes ways of winning that are about you actually considering how important friendship is.
I eagerly await the next chapter with the hope of seeing some nice art, some nice boobs and ass scene from one of the many hot girls and some funny moments.
I couldn't give a shit about some supposed morals, about where the story is supposed to go or what is suppose to happen.
Nothing matters, all that matters is Erza's glorious booty, Lucy's funny faces and comments and the art. Just accept it and learn to focus on what Fairy Tail really has to offer.
When did you start reading this series? If it was a year ago i can understand but the series started off with continuity and good writing before the bullshit kept repeating itself.
Why do you read One Piece? You have it in your favorites. Are you telling me that the morals One Piece conveys are bad? Doesn´t it deliver morals? If One Piece does, why are people wrong in assuming that a different Shounen tells morals too? What´s your point?
I am fully behind the sentiment that people have to go into Fairy Tail with low expectations, nonetheless it´s not like the series never tries to teach morals. If they don´t, how do you explain the amount of panels dedicated to friendship speeches and the elaboration upon feelings and their meaning. Again your argument makes no sense. I can argue that Mashima sometimes contradicts himself, but you claim that there is no substance to begin with.
Which is a fair opinion to have, but you cannot apply that to everyone.
It´s like "insert fantard here" One Piece storytelling offers nothing besides retelling the same story each arc with fights that have no value because everyone knows Luffy will win against the Arc boss. Wouldn't you disagree?
Again the idea that this series EVER had much of good writing is wrong and as i said to the user above, it's your fault for not having high ability to detect as such and deluding yourself that there ever was much good writing.
I do not get what One Piece has do with this. It's a completely different manga.
I don't get your obsession with morals but One Piece delivers everything better in comparison when it comes to storytelling. Not just morals, that is why is better in terms of storytelling. The predictability of One Piece has been used by the author as an advantage instead of a disadvantage. He made it so that we expect and want to see Luffy and Zoro and the crew kick the shit out of those villainous asses and he only then has to deliver to please us.
If we need to analyze what makes One Piece successful we will have to write a few pages and i am bored for that right now.
What One Piece doesn't have is as much of an appealing art(One Piece art is more quirky) and as many good looking sexy girls.
Which shows exactly what Fairy Tails strengths really are.
I donno what you've been watching, but fairy tail had good story telling and good foreshadowing of events back then. It had livable characters (erza, even though now she's trash), great villains (Jellal, to a certain extend Laxus) and great background characters who gave a lot of developments to our MC (lissana, Ul, Jellal)
Tower of heaven was foreshadowed in Galuna arc. That arc also have immense development to Grey.
Laxus's rebellion was foreshadowed in phantom arc and before too.
Ultear's betrayal lead to tenrou arc. Grimoire heart was foreshadowed there.
Tower of heaven indeed did have a good climax, it gave the ultimate development for Erza. Till then she had always been scared of Jellal and the tower, which caused her to become reserved and arrogant to others to hide them. She finally overcame the ghost (Jellal) that that mentally tortured her for 8 years. That was an excellent conclusion for the arc for me.
The above mentioned are all definitely elements of good story telling and foreshadowing IMO.
There is a reason why people loved fairy tail in the beginning. And remember that those were the times without fanservice and all related crap. Why would anyone get into fairy tail then? You already have your answer now.
If you think that fairy tail was crap from the beginning, then i wonder how you got into the series, since it didn't have fanservice back then.
