lol to ppl, farmland saga is one of best part of Vinland Saga.
This!
Of all the arcs in the manga so far, the farm arc is the one where Thorfinn gets the most development. In volumes 1-8 that many people seem to prefer, Thorfinn was just a grumpy killing machine, and his character was the same and unaffected by those around him until he was sold as a slave.
Back onto this chapter, poor Arneis. It was tragic that she lost her son, her freedom and the man that she loved. All women beaters should be dealt with :X
Going by historical facts, I anticipate everything will work out to Canute's favor in the end. It would be cool though if Iron Fist Ketil ended up being a true story, and, as hopeless as it may seem, he'll end up putting up a good fight to the death.
I see Vinland Saga as showing Thorfinn's life in three parts:
Childhood before revenge, Teenager during revenge, Adulthood after revenge.
As a child Thorfinn was innocent and happy.
As a teen Thorfinn was angry and bitter.
Teenage Thorfinn had a very one track mind--kill Askeladd.
But he could never succeed because his idea of revenge was
too childish. He thought all he had to do was train and get stronger
so he could one day best Askeladd. But it doesn't work like that.
No matter how much Thorfinn tries he's simply no match for Askeladd
who is really only "fighting" Thofinn because it amuses him.
Askeladd tells Thorfinn how to REALLY get revenge and it's
nothing like the honorable fantasy Thorfinn imagines for himself.
Then later with Askeladd's death Thorfinn's world shatters again.
Now as an adult Thorfinn learns understanding and acceptance
he knows that being a "grumpy killing machine" will lead him nowhere
and so he tries to be a pacifist instead but I think he knows that won't
work either. He knows the world is too ugly. So now he's trying to find
that balance which I think will lead him to become a True Warrior
like his father Thors the Troll.
Leif was right. Thorfinn has grown up and I'm glad.
Now set sail for Vinland!
