My one critique remains the same - the lack of vivid descriptions in intimate scenes. The narrative always seems to abruptly stop short of any explicit content, not even hinting at the prelude or aftermath. Despite this, I consistently find myself drawn to the central couple and their engaging dynamics.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the entire narrative, and I particularly appreciated the extra chapters, especially the one focusing on Yan and his wife's story.
Though not a conventional couple, the Chu character (ML's secondary love interest) and the maid shared a tragic tale too. I wished for them to find happiness, but the constant interference of the crown prince and Chu's stepmother/fiancée complicated matters. Even if they didn't end up together, it's disheartening that the author might still have the main character struggle to let go of the FL.
The Chu character deserved a better outcome. His life was filled with cruelty due to lack of choice, and his kindness was often overshadowed. He genuinely wanted to do good, as evident in his actions when it was possible. A happier ending or at least a resolution where he could move on from the FL would have been fitting, but alas, that was not granted.
Despite the occasional long flashback sequences that could sometimes feel excessive, the novel is overall excellent. The intrigue provides a backdrop, but it's not the central focus like in the previous book. Initially, it seemed like a mix of conspiracy and romance, but it shifts to prioritize the characters' relationship development. The plot twists are resolved quickly after the ML discovers his feelings, allowing for a more intimate focus on their connection.
I'd rate this novel solidly 4.5 out of 5 stars. Having read two of the author's works, I can deduce that they often create protagonists with a cold, ruthless exterior but a hidden gentle side. They usually have striking appearances, a sad past that the FL helps heal, and experience love and emotions for the first time through her. This pattern aligns with many Chinese male leads, which isn't surprising.
One positive aspect was the portrayal of the ML as a caring father, avoiding the common trope of fathers feeling jealous of their children for the sake of their relationships with the FL. This was refreshing, especially since it involved a daughter.
In summary, the novel is engaging and emotionally charged,尽管有一些遗憾和重复的情节,但整体上是一次出色的阅读体验。
The only downside is that the translation is still in progress. Although I attempted to read the machine-translated version, it was rather challenging for my understanding, so I'll patiently wait for the finished translation.
