this book is so interesting, I'm in love with this.

This BOOK ...  Is Amazing

Every once in a while, as I sift through the vast array of shounen ai offerings (and trust me, there's plenty of mediocrity), I stumble upon a hidden gem that surpasses my expectations. Though I'm not particularly drawn to historical narratives, Japanese mythology and spiritual themes captivate me due to their stark contrast with my own beliefs and culture. This led me to dive into this manga for what I hoped would be an engaging read.

Toukaidou Hisame humorously recounts the adventures of Hisame, a youthful priest who doubles as an exorcist, and Itsuki, a monk with a penchant for flirtation and pansexual charm. Itsuki speaks exclusively in hearts ("♡"), which adds a delightful touch, especially during his more menacing moments. Together, they traverse the Tokaido Road, battling formidable youkai, indulging in flirtation—mostly initiated by Itsuki—and occasionally finding love amidst the chaos. And let's not forget, they consistently vanquish youkai foes.

While I've encountered numerous manga with similar premises involving traveling priests, Toukaidou Hisame feels somewhat formulaic, hurried, and repetitive. Given its brief 8-chapter run, this is understandable. Yet, it remains consistently entertaining without feeling overly familiar or dull. A standout theme is Hisame's pacifistic approach to exorcism, striving to minimize harm regardless of the threat level posed by the monsters. Conversely, Itsuki revels in violence if it pleases Hisame. Watching them navigate these contrasting ideologies is often amusing, but when Hisame confronts the harsh reality that harm is sometimes unavoidable, it resonates deeply with both him and the reader, prompting reflections on justice and moral ambiguity.

Balancing these darker elements is what truly distinguishes the manga: Itsuki's relentless yet endearing attempts to woo Hisame. Yes, one might argue this borders on harassment, but it's evident that Itsuki's affection for Hisame transcends mere physical attraction. He even articulates that his love isn't confined by gender boundaries. His unwavering loyalty and willingness to place himself in peril for Hisame underscore the sincerity of his feelings. Despite the comedic BL tropes, I found myself empathizing with Itsuki's plight. There's hope for you yet, tiger!

On a brighter note, the artwork is stunningly beautiful. Clean, precise, and consistent, every detail from backgrounds to costumes and weaponry is meticulously rendered. The art style evokes Bleach, leaning more towards a shounen aesthetic rather than the softer designs typical of this genre. This broadens its appeal beyond genre enthusiasts. I particularly admired the character designs of Itsuki and Kagetora, though I wished we could have explored Kagetora's elaborate back tattoo further.

My primary criticism lies in the manga's brevity, leading to a rushed narrative, especially towards the conclusion. New characters are hastily introduced, and their connections feel contrived, as if the mangaka was scrambling to wrap things up. The ending feels abrupt and unresolved, akin to someone interrupting the creative process mid-stream. While cliffhangers can be effective, this one leaves much to be desired.

Fortunately, a sequel exists, and based on comments, it expands significantly on the story initially attempted here (fingers crossed for Itsuki's romantic success).

In summary, Toukaidou Hisame offers a delightful, albeit brief, journey into feudal Japan. Its quirky characters and humorous interactions brighten the intense combat scenes. Although the world-building lacks depth, it's an enchanting experience worth indulging in for its duration.<p>

Itsuki is the ultimate bastard, and I absolutely love him.  

The two main characters truly hooked me on this manga. Their interactions drove the entire story and made it so much more enjoyable. Yes, I know that might sound pretty obvious, but trust me, it’s true! Itsuki's constant flirting and Hisame's reactions made the whole series amusing and left me wanting more. Also, the moments where one of them would be in danger and the other's reaction warmed my heart—whether it was Itsuki's protective fixation for Hisame or Hisame's poorly hidden care for Itsuki. If I had to say something critical about the manga, I’d mention the lack of closure regarding their relationship. But that's why sequels exist, and I have to keep in mind this is a shounen ai, so it doesn’t bother me too much.  

If you're looking for some historic youkai shounen ai in your life, I highly recommend *Toukaidou Hisame*.

This tale unfolds in ancient Japan with a touch of the demonic. It's filled with unexpected twists and turns, making it a compelling narrative. The story may jump between characters, but this technique keeps the plot moving forward. If you enjoy a mix of comedy, demon-slaying adventures, and the antics of perverted monks, this is the story for you. It's a charming tale where you can't help but root for two characters to get together. The fight scenes are intricately detailed and reach thrilling climaxes. It's a lighthearted story that will make you chuckle. If this sounds interesting, take a moment to peek inside the book.
