It started off promising with a strong first half, but towards the second half, it seemed to resort to the isekai trope without much originality. The excessive sexual content and harem elements were overdone, although there was some redeeming quality in the development of supporting characters like Endou and Miledi during the latter part of the story.

I believe what frustrates readers is the unfulfilled potential of the novel. When an initially dark tone is abandoned for a completely different direction, it inevitably disappoints. The author demonstrated competence in the grim themes, but then shifted focus to areas where they lacked proficiency. A compelling story doesn't necessarily require a revenge plot; it's absurd, however, to see the protagonist assisting those who nearly destroyed him, especially if it doesn't contribute to character development. It comes across as illogical and shallow.

A rating of 2.5 out of 5 suggests that the book could have been better. If the narrative had stayed within a romantic comedy genre, it might have received a more favorable 3.5 out of 5. Alternatively, if it had maintained its darker tone, a score of 4.2 out of 5 might have been more fitting.

The first dungeon sets a high watermark for the story, and subsequent developments don't quite reach that level. After leaving the dungeon, the author appears to transform the main character and the first female lead into distinct personalities, giving the narrative a lighthearted, almost Looney Tunes-like quality. The scene with the rabbit girl who joins them shortly afterward becomes comical, with her being sent flying and landing with a bounce, akin to a classic cartoon pratfall. Although I haven't completed the book, I recall a particularly amusing moment where the protagonist's high school crush gains a new form or undergoes some unexpected transformation.

For those who appreciate the absurd, "Arifureta" offers an entertaining read. Commencing with a familiar "trapped in another world" setup, the protagonist initially appears expendable. Following a harrowing ordeal, his character undergoes a significant transformation, particularly in the first volume. The subsequent seven volumes delve into Hajime's journey as he navigates through the absurd, finding balance while staying true to his beliefs. While there are moments of eye-rolling and Tio's antics can be excessive, the story could have benefitted from focusing on Yue and Kaori as primary heroines. This might have been the author's intention, hinted at by the ending's message: "confronting absurdity with even more absurdity."

The first volume was promising with an impressive character transformation, but unfortunately, the protagonist's development took a disappointing turn. He became submissive to his harem, which became increasingly irritating. The lack of boundaries and his inability to say "no" made the story unbearable, causing readers to lose interest and develop a strong dislike for the characters.

Individually, I really enjoyed it. I mean, who wouldn't appreciate a protagonist who overcame betrayal, emerged even stronger, and then made a grand entrance in front of his peers, saying, "Hey guys, I'm the boss here, those who disrespected me don't deserve my protection anymore!" It's quite satisfying, isn't it?

As a result, another captivating narrative unfortunately sinks into the depths of clichéd harem light novels. "Arifureta Skokugyou" initially shines with its exploration of the main character's psyche and engaging romantic subplots. Each character boasts a distinct backstory that keeps readers hooked, even amidst challenging situations. The novel exhibits a satisfying level of depth when familiar faces reappear, witnessing the MC's significant transformation.

However, the story takes a drastic turn for the worse after the Great Orca Dungeon arc. The author seems to lose focus, descending into a degenerate and superficial realm. Characters lose their individuality, turning the MC into a polygamist, and an influx of powerful women簇拥 around him without any logical reasoning. Each companion becomes reduced to a single stereotype, robbing the story of its former gravity and substance. What was once a serious tale transforms into a poorly executed rom-com.

In summary, if you choose to continue, stop at the MC's escape from the initial dungeon. Treat that as the definitive ending and enjoy it without delving further. The subsequent parts are best left to be discarded, consigned to the flames of a dumpster fire.

When I first started reading novels, I came across this idea. My perspective might be unremarkable, but I've seen it in numerous anime and manga where the main character gets knocked around by foes, friends, and even romantic interests, yet they recover and carry on as if nothing happened. This might have influenced my thoughts, but ultimately...

The book was enjoyable for me, even though the writing style wasn't a major concern. It made sense within its context, with the translated parts being solid, while the machine translation could have been better, but it didn't detract much from the story.

The dark beginning initially caught my attention and helped shape the character's growth, making him mature sooner than expected. Some reviews, especially the negative ones, criticize the main character for being an unlikable jerk with a harem, and some girls getting hurt along the way. But remember, this is a harem story; it's inevitable that he'll attract multiple female characters.

People seem to struggle with the concept, but consider the circumstances: he's been through a lot of trauma, forced to survive in a grim environment with those who betrayed him as his last connection. If not for the loli vampire, he'd likely be a brooding demon lord.

He's a complex character, a Tsundere. People often have difficulty accepting this dynamic when it happens with male characters. He's human, grappling with his emotions and the pain of betrayal. He doesn't kill everyone out of anger; instead, the girls become a source of warmth and help soften his cold exterior. As he struggles to overcome his past and cope with his emotions, his protective nature intensifies, often manifesting in half-hearted explanations to save the day.

Edginess was initially at the forefront... but that changed. I find it disappointing how the main character completely lets go of his vendetta against his classmates, or even his teacher. His entire struggle in the first part of the story revolved around his intense anger and fury. However, later on, those emotions seem to dissipate or become overshadowed by the concept of "the greater good," which I consider to be a cop-out. It's commendable for him to adopt a more principled stance, but I had hoped to see him remain true to his edgy nature.

Poison taste test: If you liked the anime adaptation you’ll like the webnovel. Main story is from 1-179 and was great. I was looking forward to these after stories but they are more like side stories than an epilogue. Might stop here at chapter 209, but id definitely give the main story a read.
