is this series going anywhere i mean 800 chapters and im still not sure what is going on i have read up to chapter 740 and so much is missing how come on there still isn't any explanation on the devil fruits this shit is just a rinse and repeat cycle.
This is a great manga. I just want to get that out there first. Before I read One Piece for myself I heard some people saying it was a Dragon Ball ripoff and while I can see where they're coming from sorta (Luffy does remind me of younger Goku quite a lot) One Piece is by far its own thing, and a pretty amazing experience.
I won't lie though, the series certainly has problems. For one, (and some people willl probably hate me saying this) but I think the series is just too gosh darn long. I know it's a shounen and it's popular so of course they're gonna stretch it out, but at some point I think it just gets kind of crazy. One Piece has hundreds of chapters and anime episodes, and like a dozen movies. While it does make the series epic in scale, it also means that some plotlines just take forever. That and One Piece also has lots of characters. Tons in fact, and they don't stop being important to the plot when they leave so sometimes you have a break of 300+ chapters before a character returns. This is fine for the most part because it helps build the world but at the same time it's clear this story will be going on for a couple hundred more chapters at least. This means they'll be adding in more characters and it's already making my head spin. Heck there's 10 main characters in the Straw Hat crew, and in some of the later chapters the story starts to buckle a bit trying to keep the reader informed what's going on with everyone. Also while there's all sorts of varied character designs throughout the series, after a certain point nearly every woman becomes the same basic template (enormous tits, tiny waist) which isn't a huge deal because hey this is for teenage boys but does make me wish he tried harder with the female character designs.
Mostly this is just nitpicking though. I mean the story is over 800 chapters by now, if you see that and you're still interested you're probably going to be cool with a little complication. Since I've been following the story for the past five years or so I don't think much about the length at this point but it will be one of the biggest hurdles for someone coming into this series fresh. If you're willing to put in the time however you'll be greatly rewarded, One Piece is just a blast to read. There's a lot of incredibly creative powers, awesome fights and some fantastic moments of friendship. A surprising amount of emotions here as well, at a couple of points during the story I shed some tears or smiled in pure joy. I think this manga is primarily about the joy of life, about friendship and love and fighting for what you want.
Then there's the setting for the world, which really lends the series a wonderful sense of mystery and adventure. The island setting lets each new location be as crazy and varied as Oda wants, and since they reveal bits of the plot over the course of the story you always want to read more to find out if they talk more about one of your favorite plotlines. I really can't wait to see the end one day, just so I can see where Luffy's story concludes.
I really recommend this story. Sure there are some parts that aren't as good, but this is one of the most popular mangas ever for a reason. The story is fun, the characters are memorable and you feel like these people are on a real adventure.
P.S. - The best shounen is Fullmetal Alchemist and the second best is My Hero Academia in case you're curious.
the adventure is there. the mysteries are there. the characters are great. it's hilarious.
sure, certain arcs dragged on a little bit when reading weekly, but right now it's on the best arc yet.
for short, the plot have no process at all, random scene pop up, random character pop up. The plot is simple and repeated itself. Character nice at first half but keep remain forever. Main lead is super hero but simple minded, kind but air head and stupid. Only have fist-solution.
Seriously !!!!! over 800 chapters and the plot is still a mess !!! Droooooopppped !!!!!!!
still I give 6 overall. Maybe I will come back when it finished. Or maybe not
I love One Piece and can say that it is my number one manga. The story telling great, each character is unique, and the world is brilliantly design. Honestly the drawing style is unique and I say that it just bring out a better manga. I am sometimes baffle of how many manga drawing styles are quite the same nowadays and One Piece unique design is great.
The story is yes at times sure rinse and repeat, but how many manga done this before. But way how the story is told is great. I love how Oda makes the characters react to one another and how sometimes comedic scene appear at very intense moments that lets you take a step back and get ready for some more action.
The characters are all unique, you can't say that any of the Strawhat crew are the same. Each one adds to the story in their own way and I can't say anyone of them are useless. Also another thing that is great about One Piece is how many different island there are. There should be way more island out there that Strawhats hasn't visit because there are many routes to take to get to One Piece and well that is awesome. That mean there could of had been other great adventure to enjoy.
If you haven't read One Piece you are missing out.
For sure in my top 10 mangas.
Had some really nice reads with One Piece , but it's time to start wrapping things up...the history it's starting to get very repetitive, i expect ODA can freshen things up a little on the next saga.
At least i wanted more histories on the side characters that for me make this show so amazing , the villains , marines and other pirates.
This manga will not suit everyone's tastes, and you definitely need a lot of patience to get through this entire manga. The art is particularly strange for the shounen genre. However, it is worth the temporary pain.
Some may call this manga's different arcs repetitive or dumb upon slimming them down to short sentence descriptions, but that is applicable to every story in existence. What matters in the end is the story's execution, and this is where One Piece excels.
The characters actually come to life in this manga despite the distasteful art, and I've fallen in love with each and every character--even the villains! (* except one...*) As the story goes on you begin to see the formation of a close knit crew of amazing people called the Straw Hat Pirates-- and you will go on a bizarre but unforgettable journey together with them on their ship. I love OP for making me laugh with the silly characters who always seem to tackle life as it comes--they are SO carefree that I am infected with their enthusiasm and optimism.
I love the idealistic portrayal of this particular group of pirates: (they are more like sailors) Their ambitions, dreams, loyalty, and hilarity have made me a huge fan of OP. I cry when any of the main characters cry, and love everything Oda has pieced together.
Get ready to board the feels train, folks. You're in for an amazing ride. 😉
I started following this manga/anime when I was a little kid and I still enjoy it a lot. Many people thinks that it's getting repetitive and boring, but for me it's not like that at all. Every arc of this series has it's particular charm, or that's what I think. Maybe it's true that at first it was more of an "adventure story", but the plot is too developed fot it to remain as a story that simple. And personally I think it would have been a mistake for it to still be only that, because even if it's funny and enjoyable the "adventure thing", a manga with this many chapters has to have some deep plot.
I don't think that the art is getting worse, every long manga suffers from "art changes". Too many years have gone by since Oda started drawing this, obviously his art is gonna change... It's different, but I don't find it better nor worse.
Obviously, even thought One Piece is a "must-read" for many of us, not everyone is gonna like it. It's just impossible. I won't say that this is the best manga, but I assure that I enjoy, laugh and cry reading the manga and watching the anime. I find the story very inspiring; a story with absurd arcs and situations but also with very emotive and sad ones. I like this diversity, and I hope I still do as time passes and Oda draws more chapters =)
Ive read One Piece and I can honestly say that it is overrated. I can appreciate many of the good things that happen, but in all honesty One Piece is 600 chapters and NOTHING HAS CHANGED. You can point to little things here and there but that hardly accounts for character development. You can call it what you want but that is not art style, its just bad drawing. The transvestite thing is disgusting and I cannot believe someone is justfying it. Im tired and dont wanna go on but let me summarize 600 chapters of OP to you.
OVERRATED!!!
I'm a bit biased with this manga since I've been reading it for 4+ years now.... So, it's kind of hard to put it down when you consider how long I have read this.
Overall, this manga is awesome, and Luffy has been my idol for a while now despite how retarded he can sometimes be. Zoro has earned an irreplaceable spot in my heart as well....(so has Usop)
This manga starts off kind of slow and in a boring shounen manner... The art also starts out absolutely crappily.... But trust me, it gets better. To be honest, when I first started the series, I quit 5 times..... and read up to chapter 67.... but after that, I was soon hooked with the whole series... I think it started during the Arlong fight... That part had me tearing up at Luffy's loyalty.
And when I read up to the Alabasta arc? I was part of the crew already, laughing and crying along with them. By the time I got to Skypeia arc, I had become a true fangirl.... And good lord by the time we got to the island filled with woman, I was broken in tears from what happened to the Straw Hats. And geez POOR SANJI the author was downright CRUEL in selecting his destination.
So yeah. I've been following One Piece fervently quite a while now. It's a good manga to try out, if you have the patience.
CURRENTLY: I've already read the ENTIRE series 3 or 4 times. I've watched the anime 2 times.....and I've gotten myself a room full of one piece posters and stickers. ha h aha ha.
Many people consider One Piece a miracle. And miracles are weird. I if would have to describe what type of manga One Piece is, I will say that it is an adventure-driven manga with character –driven tendencies.
The story follows a young man named Monkey D. Luffy: a cheerful, friendly, simple yet impulsive boy who dreams about becoming the Pirate King by finding the titular treasure. The plot is quite typical nowadays, but as far as I know, One Piece was the first one who used the “to be king” premise. After the first arc (East Blue), is easy to notice that Oda is not looking to tell us a great story ( something that still he does), but he is looking to draw us into a fantastic journey. In fact, the whole looking for the treasure is just an excuse for adventure. But, if you got sucked up into that adventure, you would definitively love it.
A common complaint about One Piece is that the concept of pirates isn’t faithful to the one in our world. But every other shonen does that. The initial concept, in this case “pirates”, is just the substance for the story. Oda isn’t looking to show us a crew of evildoers ruining everything they come into. Instead, he emphasizes the latter said with themes like dreams, freedom, friendship and what a true treasure is.
The tone of One Piece is what makes it so weird, great and unique. One Piece is pretty silly. But this silliness is what allows One Piece to incorporate various genres. It goes from drama to comedy, and vice-versa. And it goes from situations that move you to the point of tears or make laugh until you can’t breathe, and vice-versa.
The last paragraph also applies to the characters. Many of the characters designs and personalities are weird. In fact, it is common for EVERY character to have a quirk. But that what make them distinguished and creative. A bonus that One Piece has is that every secondary o tertiary characters could make a comeback in future chapters. And they are usually re-used in sudden and creative ways. Now, let’s proceed with the main characters. It is interesting to note that Luffy is the most archetypical from the crew, given that the other members hardly fall into common anime/manga character archetypes. From the beginning a varied cast is given: a badass swordsman, a greedy navigator, a coward and liar sniper and a perverted cook.
The most notable flaw of One Piece is the pacing. Sometimes the plot develops too fast, and suddenly this development begins to drag out. Many people are complaining right now about this problem in present arcs, but it seems that they forgot this pacing issue was always there. Other “problem” is that most arcs have the same structure: the crew arrives, someone is trouble, they kick some butts, etc. Yet, each arc manages to differentiate from each other so well, despite the last thing said.
Other potential "problem" is that some arcs, at first sight, don’t SEEM to be related to the plot. But Oda show us things for future purposes. In other words, some arcs exist solely to introduce characters or concepts that will later be developed in the story. This is another point that people seems to have forgotten.
The reason I give One Piece a 10, even though I acknowledge its flaws, is due to Oda who has stated he purposely dragged out his work because he liked it so much. And this passion is something that can be perceived by the way he has handled things along these 15 years. I'm still surprised how he has able to keep things fresh and have kept a very good level of quality in writing. Perhaps not a masterpiece, but definitely above the common shonen standard.
I would really like to recommend this to anyone. But I know many people wouldn’t handle it because of the length. So, if you have a lot of spare time and want some adventure, go on. If you are passing through a difficult situation and you feel exhausted from everything around you, I implore you to read One Piece. Is good for the mood.
I am a fantasy person, i have seen tons of shounen manga, and i have to say this is the best i've seen.
if your a fan of Naruto or Fairy tale, i truly recommend this
Knowing me, i never really like slow plots but this and naruto has me hook almost every chapter and episode.
the art can be annoying in the begining but now the art has improve so much and is really great, especially the fighting scenes.
next, the characters are very extraordinary, i believe it is like a pot of different people part of the same soup. the story also has many funny scenes and characters that will have you laughing so hard you"ll cry. the story also has one sad scene that left in tears for about 20 episodes every time it mentions his death i'll cry, and im pretty tough hearted for me to cry.
also, i believe the plot is well developed, it shows the tragedies the world can be made of but the good things apart of it. it also show that nothing is pure good and every thing has a dark air around it(hint; marines believe they are doing what right but we then see they also do things wrong)
last, the beginning of arcs are verrrrrrrry slow, but don't skip any of them, they are also well developed. the plot will also have you hook with a little mystery and excitement of an OMG scene or " i wonder what will happen when.......", which makes you want to read non stop
