Bell peppers have a strong taste and hard texture, but it is very used there, but most kids don't like them because, well... their taste buds aren't fully developed and bell peppers are too "impactful" to them.
But because of the common use, and that many other foodstuffs of Japan have a peculiar taste, kids tend to get used to them, and for some reason... bell peppers became the symbol of a kid maturing and becoming less picky about what they eat.
Don't ask me why this particular vegetable was singled out or why it became such a culturally widespread belief, but mind... that it is exaggerated for joke purposes, there are adults that dislike it and won't eat as much as children.
Man, I love this manga so much. Since chapter one I thought the dialogue was super fun, but the fact it's maintained that quality throughout this far is a testament to how good the mangaka is at writing banter. Just a complete pleasure to read this weekly, fr
