Yuugi Mutou is the main protagonist of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters. At the beginning of the series, he is a shy and short boy who often gets teased at school for his height, leading to him feeling isolated. However, his grandfather gives him the Millennium Puzzle before the story begins, telling him that solving it would grant one wish. After successfully solving the puzzle, Yuugi wishes for friends, and his wish is granted instantly. He also awakens the spirit residing in the puzzle, though Yuugi remains unaware of this until much later.
Once Yuugi becomes aware of the spirit, they grow very close, with Yuugi calling the spirit "Mou Hitori No Boku" (The Other Me) and the spirit calling him "Aibou" (Partner). Yuugi then serves as a vessel for the spirit and learns that his duty is to help the spirit recover lost memories. With the help of his friends, he assists the Pharaoh in regaining his memories while overcoming numerous challenges.
Yuugi lives mostly with his grandfather, as his parents are frequently away on business trips. His mother, Ashita, briefly appears at the start of the second season during an argument between Yuugi and the spirit. Yuugi is also a talented duelist thanks to his grandfather's expertise and guidance. Throughout the series, Yuugi initially uses his grandfather's deck, but in the final season—Pharaoh's Memory—he creates his own deck featuring magicians, spell-casters, and machines.
In the series, Yuugi is portrayed as a "Ladies' Man," according to the KCGP filler episodes. However, from the start, it's clear that he has a crush on Anzu Mazaki, his childhood friend.
Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
Yuugi Mutou makes several appearances in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX. In the first episode, he is seen as an adult when Judai Yuki encounters him on his way to the entrance exam at Duel Academy. Yuugi hands Judai the Winged Kuriboh and leaves. He is mentioned multiple times throughout the series.
In the final episodes, 179–180, Yuugi reappears to Judai, offering to help him regain what he had lost over the past few years—the joy of dueling. The older Yuugi guides Judai to a time period between the Battle City and Doma Arcs. There, Judai meets a different version of Yuugi and challenges him to a duel, which Yuugi accepts. Yuugi notices Judai's strong magical powers and allows the spirit to take over the duel.

Yuugi is one of the main characters in this 10th Anniversary special of Yu-Gi-Oh! Alongside Judai Yuki from Yu-Gi-Oh! GX and Yusei Fudou from Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's, he battles Paradox to save Duel Monsters and preserve the existence of time itself.
In one of the 5D's openings, it is shown that Yuugi loses his grandfather during one of Paradox's assaults on his timeline, causing him immense distress.
