Anzu is Yugi Mutou's childhood friend and later becomes close to Katsuya Jonouchi and Hiroto Honda, despite not initially getting along with them. In the first series anime, Miho Nosaka is also one of Anzu's friends. Although she doesn't often play games with Yugi and his friends, she once beat Jonouchi in a game. Initially portrayed as spunky and tomboyish in the manga, Anzu stands up for Yugi when he is bullied by Honda and Jonouchi. She has a kind-hearted, strong-willed, and supportive personality.
In the Duel Monsters anime, Anzu and Honda act as cheerleaders for Yugi and Jonouchi during their duels. Anzu shows proficiency in dueling herself and keeps up with the events of the matches. Her character is more feminine, polite, and she has a strong sense of loyalty and friendship, often taking on a motherly or sisterly role for her male friends. Fans of the English anime know her for her "friendship speeches."
Anzu is athletic and works various jobs to save money for a dance school in New York City. Early in the series, she works at "Burger World." In the manga, she loses this job after punching a customer who harassed her. She then works at KaibaCorp, where she meets her friends at KaibaLand. In the Toei anime, Anzu, Honda, and Miho work at Burger World together. After it closes, Honda and Miho find employment at a beef bowl restaurant. In the 1999 film, it's revealed that Anzu works at the "Duel Monsters Center," where she knows Shōgo Aoyama, a regular customer and Yugi's neighbor.
Takahashi responded to fan mail about why Yugi and Anzu aren't in a romantic relationship by stating that there is a love triangle involving both Yugi and Yami Yugi. He added that Yugi and Anzu are very careful around each other, preventing them from expressing their feelings. Anzu's first deck focuses on Light-Attribute Fairy monsters, while her second deck centers around Spellcasters like Fire Sorcerer, Maha Vailo, and Dark Magician Girl, reflecting her affection for both Yugis. She duels once in the manga and three times in the second anime series, using a deck similar to Yugi's but with a more feminine touch during the Virtual World arc.
