A transfer student, originally portrayed as British in the 4Kids version, who befriends the main group of the story. Like Yugi, he has a keen interest in games, especially tabletop role-playing games such as Monster World. Bakura, the owner of the Millennium Ring, harbors a dark spirit within himself, similar to Dark Yugi. Before his introduction in the story, he frequently changed schools and isolated himself because every time he played a game with friends, they would end up in comas. This was due to Dark Bakura imposing Penalty Games on them, trapping their souls inside RPG miniatures. Alongside Yugi and his friends, they unite to defeat Dark Bakura in a Shadow Game of Monster World. Afterward, the normal Bakura becomes part of the main group and participates in many of their conflicts. Despite the risks, Bakura continues to keep the Millennium Ring, driven by curiosity about its history. His trusting and innocent nature often leads him into disagreements with the others and allows Dark Bakura to possess him unknowingly. Prior to meeting Yugi and his friends, Bakura's sister, Amane, died in a car accident (this detail is omitted from the second series). Bakura deeply misses her and often writes letters to her in heaven. In the first animated series, Miho Nosaka had a crush on Bakura. In the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters anime, his role is significantly reduced compared to the manga, as he is mostly controlled by Dark Bakura and doesn't accompany Yugi and his friends as much. Additionally, he is introduced during the Duelist Kingdom arc merely as someone they knew from school rather than a close friend, and his passion for tabletop role-playing games is largely omitted.
