Honda, a student in Class 1-B at Domino High School, became friends with Yugi, Jonouchi, and Anzu. Later, he also befriends Bakura. In the manga, Honda initially appears as Jonouchi's street thug friend and has a crush on Miho Nosaka. In the 1998 anime, he is the head of the school's beautician department. Alongside Jonouchi, he was saved from the bully Ushio by Yugi, though he still dislikes Yugi at first.
After confessing his feelings for Miho Nosaka to Jonouchi, he asks Yugi for help in writing a love letter to her in the form of a puzzle. When Ms. Chono, a vain teacher, confiscated the puzzle and threatened to punish Miho if the secret admirer did not come forward, Yugi and Jonouchi stood up for him by claiming they wrote it. Ms. Chono tried to solve the puzzle anyway, but Dark Yugi secretly turned it into a Shadow Game, shattering Ms. Chono's pretty face as the Penalty Game. From then on, Honda becomes one of Yugi's closest friends, even though Miho later rejects him when he asks her out directly.
Honda always helps Jonouchi or Yugi whenever they are in need. He is a loyal friend to the end. In the 1998 anime, Honda has a recurring crush on Miho, but he does not interact with Ms. Chono. In the English version of the Duel Monsters anime, his backstory is heavily edited to remove violent elements, and his role is slightly downplayed. In this version, he develops a crush on Jonouchi's sister Shizuka, and his story with Miho is never mentioned. He also has a strong rivalry with Ryuji Otogi, competing for Shizuka's affections.
