Seto Kaiba is the majority shareholder and President of KaibaCorp, a multinational company. His ultimate goal is to become the world's greatest player of Duel Monsters. To achieve this, he must defeat his arch-rival, Yugi Muto. Often considered an anti-hero, Kaiba's motives are usually self-centered but occasionally align with good causes.
Kaiba was initially portrayed as a prodigious, cold-hearted gamer who would stop at nothing to reach his goals, even resorting to extreme measures like seemingly killing his opponents. His childhood was difficult due to his abusive stepfather. When Kaiba learned that Yugi's grandfather possessed a "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" card, he challenged Yami Yugi to a duel and lost, falling into a coma after Yami used his power to purge Kaiba's heart of its evil. Although reformed, Kaiba retained his arrogance and rivalry with Yugi. While he left the story following the Battle City arc, he remains a major character in the anime adaptation and is mentioned in the sequel series Yu-Gi-Oh! GX as the founder of Duel Academy.
A recurring theme in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters involves Seto Kaiba dealing with people seeking revenge for actions taken by Gozaburo Kaiba or attempting to take over KaibaCorp. Kaiba can be condescending, selfish, no-nonsense, and narcissistic, yet sometimes oblivious, according to Yami Yugi. Since being adopted by Gozaburo, Kaiba became much colder, though he still has strong protective instincts for his younger brother, Mokuba. He will risk his life to safeguard Mokuba’s safety and shows compassion for children, especially orphans, having been one himself.
At various points in the series, Kaiba performs kind acts, though he covers them up with sarcasm and denies them if asked. These moments increase in frequency towards the later series. Despite maintaining a conservative, stiff, and uptight exterior, Kaiba values pride highly—both his own and others'. This pride makes him a formidable opponent who never backs down from a fight, but it also results in a sense of superiority and arrogance, making it challenging for others to earn his respect. His pride often leads to difficulty when working as a team or relying on others. Throughout the series, his pride in himself and his accomplishments remains a significant aspect of his character, though it becomes slightly more subdued towards the end.
