Yumichika is the narcissistic friend of Ikkaku Madarame. In their past, they roamed the Rukongai together in search of fights. One day, Ikkaku lost to Kenpachi Zaraki. Inspired by Kenpachi's speech about living to defeat the one who failed to kill them, and later learning that Kenpachi had become a captain, Yumichika and Ikkaku joined the 11th Division to serve under him. Yumichika desired the 3rd Seat because he believed the kanji for three was the most beautiful, but Ikkaku took it, so Yumichika settled for the 5th Seat, thinking the number five resembled a three. It remains unclear whether Ikkaku holds the seat due to his superiority over Yumichika or if Yumichika allows him to have it out of friendship. Yumichika has colorful feathers on his eyelashes and eyebrows, along with shiny skin and hair, giving him a feminine appearance early in the manga. He judges everything and everyone based on beauty and is highly vain, though he can also be caring and helpful.
Yumichika's zanpakutō is Fuji Kujaku (藤孔雀, meaning Wisteria Peacock). The shikai command for Fuji Kujaku is "bloom" (咲け, sake?, "bloom for me" in English adaptations). In its shikai form, Fuji Kujaku transforms into a sickle-shaped blade known as a falx, with the cutting edge on the inside. A hinge at the hilt allows the sword to split into four identical blades. Although Yumichika doesn't admit it to his 11th Division comrades out of fear of being disliked—since their division's zanpakutō are typically used for direct attack—he actually wields a kidō-type sword. By using the command sakikurue (裂き狂え, meaning tearing deviate), Fuji Kujaku flares up, resembling peacock feathers, and drains the opponent's spiritual power, enabling Yumichika to easily defeat even lieutenant-level fighters. It is assumed he is trying to learn bankai, though Fuji Kujaku, being just as narcissistic as Yumichika, leads to comical moments where Yumichika yells at his sword while attempting to break it against a boulder.
