Renji is a distinctive Bleach character with long crimson hair usually tied in a high ponytail and an extensive tribal tattoo covering his upper body. He dresses in the standard Shinigami kimono but often wears either expensive glasses or a white headband.
In terms of personality, Renji exhibits a range of traits. He can be cocky and eccentric, yet also becomes depressed after defeats. At times, he appears clueless and humorous. Despite being carefree and cheerful throughout much of the series, he can become serious, especially during life-and-death situations involving himself or those he cares about.
His relationship with Captain Kuchiki Byakuya is complex. Renji views Byakuya as someone he must surpass. Initially, when Renji was still at the Academy, he found Byakuya chilling.
