Chad is a teenager of Mexican descent who appears much older due to his extraordinary height. He has a tattoo on his left shoulder that reads "Amore e Morte," meaning "love and death" in Italian, featuring a heart, a snake, and angel wings around the heart. Typically seen in his school uniform or a t-shirt, Chad once wore a dark, long-sleeved shirt with a rose on the left sleeve, possibly honoring his grandfather, Oscar Joaquín de la Rosa, whose surname translates to "of the Rose."
Chad is quiet and often subjected to jokes or bullying because he rarely fights back, whether against ordinary people, hollows, or Soul Reapers. However, he is treated equally among his friends in Karakura, including Ichigo, Keigo, and Mizuiro. Despite his imposing size, Chad has a soft spot for cute things like small animals and Kon, whom he treats with dignity. His physical strength is matched by his superhuman durability, allowing him to survive significant impacts and wield telephone poles as weapons even when injured. Additionally, Chad ranks 10th out of 322 students academically.
Chad enjoys music but seldom watches TV, with the exception of "Carnivore Kingdom," which he loves so much he bought the DVDs. He also enjoys "Don Kan'onji's Ghost Bust." Although he owns a bass guitar, it has never been shown being played, though it appears in his room in episode 69 and during the 8th anime ending sequence, as well as after a "band practice" in episode 12.
